Val,

I'd get a new computer guru if he tells you to keep '98 :-). Just my two

cents of course!

I switched from 98 to 2000 and you couldn't pay me enough to ever go

back! I have never ONCE had 2000 crash on me, and I've had it for 2

years now! Plus, it recognizes new hardware, installs the software needed

to go with it, etc. I totally love it! And it's WAY more secure that XP

from what I've read in PC mags.....although Microsoft is fixing lots of

those security holes with patches.....

I honestly can't imagine any " real " computer guy telling you to keep

windows 98! All the trade journals say the same thing over and over and

over again - it's a big piece of ...well, you know! Of course, you'll

need to look at if you'll have to upgrade software, is it worth the cost,

and on and on....lots to weigh in, that's for sure!

Good luck :).

Well, due to the much appreciated advice, I called a microsoft certified

computer guy and his advice is to keep Windows 98. that it is an

excellent system just needs some fine tuning.

What do you all think? I was really towards windows 2000.

Keep the advice coming. All is appeciated. Thanks

I agree. All the gurus I know say that ME is crapola. Win 98 is better than

ME, and 2000 is even better. I have Win ME on one machine and Win 98 on the

other. My Win ME machine is horrid. It's always crashing and locking up. It

is a relatively new computer with lots of resources. The other machine doesn't

have near the memory, speed, etc., and is fairly stable (the Win 98 one).

If I were starting with a new system, I'd probably go Win XP, first making sure

all the software I needed was compatible. My next choice down would be 2000.

Val,

Do let us know how it all turns out in the end :-).

I worked at a software company filled with computer geeks, programmgers,

etc., and they could never get my WIN 98 PC to stop crashing no matter

what. They tried everything you can imagine....and more you can't! But, I

must say I do know a few people who have WIN 98 and they never have

problems!

It may be the way we each use our computer. I like to have about a dozen

(literally) programs open while I work. I am VERY hard on PCs ;-).

Switching hardware in and out, back and forth between programs, and I

demand that everything work right on my PC all the time, no problems, no

balking :-). So, for me, it had to be 2000 because it's so stable.

Maybe you don't beat on yours the way I do, though, and 98 may work great

once someone irons all the bugs out!

Love to hear your end results as I'm continually learning in this area!

I finally called one of the best places in town and asked. Their advice

was to keep 98 and let someone come out and fix the problems you are

having and do some fine tuning to get everything back in place. I also

have 2nd edition WIN 98.

The truth lay somewhere between all of these things people have heard. The

truth is that there are so many combinations of memory (including types of

memory and not all memory is created equal by any means), processor speed

and type (intel, AMD, etc) and other combinations of hardware such as

different brands of sound cards, harddrives, graphic cards, etc, and not to

mention there are hundreds of different mother boards running different chip

sets. Now try to imagine all of the different software drivers that have to

be written for these products and how they all have to mesh together with

the operating system (windows) and with each other. The reasons for

crashing can vary from machine to machine. Now start adding software to the

equation. I think you could see the picture now. Yes there are more stable

operating systems than 98 or ME but some folks are able to run them without

problem. It just basically comes down to finding what works for each

individual machine.

Re: The Windows ME debate

I just asked the next-door-neighbor computer guru which was better - ME or 98

second edition. Whew! I just lived through 20 minutes of fired-up explanation.

Apparently you should avoid ME like the plague from a technician standpoint. He

said that most people regress back to 98 2nd edition when they have problems

with ME and he said ME is so bad that a lot of techs won't support it. You

apparently use DOS line prompts a lot to repair things in Windows, and I have

seen him do this on my own computer. In ME they removed the DOS prompt and a

lot of the tools used to repair the system. I wish you all could have been here

to bear witness to the anti-ME tyrade. I'm convinced I'll never use it!

The bottom line is: It takes twice as long to repair files in ME than 98 2nd

edition and he said you could expect a much bigger bill if you need to have

anything repaired. His choice: XP. That's my choice too now that I have it

and have used it.

Hi,

I have heard that it is not the Windows that you have problems with (when you

crash) but the amount of RAM that you have. I took this to heart and had 256 MB

of RAM installed and have never had any problem with Windows 98. Just my

personal experience.

Just would like to put my two cents in on this Windows 98, 2000, XP chain.

I just bought my Dell in December 2001, and it came with Windows XP. I

seriously dislike it. I've lost more work than I ever lost with Windows 98.

I've never had Windows 2000. I've put a new hard drive in an older

computer for my daughter and loaded Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) on. I've

had that on two computers and NEVER had a bit of trouble. With XP I've had

more trouble than I care to contend with.

Just my two cents!

I wish I had known this bit of info . I had 98 SE on my old computer

and it kept crashing BUT I only had 64MB RAM and because of the motherboard

was unable to upgrade. Finally the motherboard died and it made more sense

to buy a new computer.

Could be your processor also. I have upgraded my ram and still have problems

with third computer. If you have Intel processor or not, I do not know, but

what I do know is AMD is famous for " not working. "

This discussion on computers has been making me chuckle. It reminds me of

when people start to describe their favorite cars! One swears by Toyotas,

while another says they are a piece of junk. Another says Ford has the

lowest repair prices, and someone else pipes up and says they've had

nothing but expensive repair bills with Ford! :-).

I guess it all comes down to how well what you have is working for you!

Since 98 never worked well for me, and 2000 has never given me a single

problem, that's the filter I see computers through! Someone else may see

it entirely different with their experience!

Go with what works for you!

I beg to differ. I have an AMD and I love it. Granted, it's old and outdated

now, and I soon need to get a new one, but the performance of an AMD is just the

same if not better than Intel, plus I don't have to pay for the Intel name. :)
