Guest guest
Here's a quote from the Oxford PSC-support UK meeting (thanks, Ivor): " A rare sub-group within a rare disease. PSC normally affects both intrahepatic and extrahepatic ducts but small-duct PSC only affects the small ducts inside the liver. Some have thought that this isn't anything different from the usual PSC - it's only that the PSC has been discovered at an early stage when the disease has not yet reached the large ducts. 3 studies published recently in Oxford, Scotland and the US have all produced similar results - that there is such a thing as small-duct psc and that the outcome is more benign than that of the usual psc. The association with UC may also be different. 12% of those with small-duct psc will go on to develop normal psc, in which case the outcome is similar to other pscers. " The description you've stated sounds more like large duct to me. Arne 53 - UC 9/77 - PSC 4/00 Alive and (mostly) well in Minnesota -----Original Message----- From: nichole_rowland Before joining this group and reading these posts I never heard of small duct verses large duct PSC. Since my husband has not had an ERCP yet but the MRCP found: " There was diffuse stenosis throughout the right main biliary ductal system extendingd into the secondary branchees. Similarly, there was abnormal stricturing withing the left main bile duct extending into the secondary branches. There was a focal stricture of the common hapatic duct. " Would that indicate it is large duct PSC?
Guest guest
Dear Nichole; I agree with Arne that this sounds very much like large duct PSC. A note on frequency of blood tests .... part of the reason that my son's blood is being monitored every 3 months is that his hepatologist wants to be sure that there are no adverse reactions to rifampin, which he began taking in May of this year. I agree with Barb that every 6 months would be reasonable unless new medications [with potential for liver toxicity] were being introduced.
