Guest guest
I asked this question of my hep - he stated that prophylactic stenting (stent before you have problems) is not a common practice due to the possible side effects. Once you are having significant problems (jaundice, recurrent cholangitis, intractable pain, etc.) the benefits outweigh the risk. They tried to stent me at a local hospital when I was first diagnosed (cholangitis, jaundice, pain). They were unsuccessful; I did develop pancreatitis. The second time, a year later, I was sent to Mayo. They had no problems whatsoever dilating and stenting my CBD. I think the difference is that that's all the specialist at Mayo does, and they are very good at it. He had 8 scheduled for the day I went in. According to http://www.medhelp.org/forums/gastro/archive/3033.html, the incidence of pancreatitis in ERCPs is around 8% Arne 53 - UC 9/77 - PSC 4/00 Alive and (mostly) well in Minnesota -----Original Message----- From: heliosman2000 Should a stent be put in a very blocked area for precautionary reasons?? I am glad your stent was successful. Now why would a specialist from Stanford want to stent me if I had no symptoms and also, she never told me any of the other risks except that of pancreatitis. My faith in drs dwindles every time I have an issue. My son just read on the internet that Milk Thistle is used in Europe. What are your thoughts on this?? > > -----Original Message----- > From: heliosman2000 [mailto:rdcappel@c...] > > > Should a stent be put in a very blocked area for precautionary reasons??
