Guest guest
Welcome Susie! Glad you joined us! I don't have Dr. T, however many on here do, so I'm sure they can help answer ?'s for you. Best of luck with your upcoming SOON surgery! Dawn Newbie Hi everyone! A listmate on another list told me about this one and I rushed right over to join! =o) My name is Susie and I am having surgery on Oct 30th (EEK only 4 days away!) with Dr. Thayer in Newton. I am so excited and nervous, and anxious, and nervous lol I am mostly excited! Let's see...I am 29 years old and have not always had a weight problem. I weighed 105 when I graduated high school, but babies, bedrest, a husband in the CG who is always gone, and all that genetic stuff saw me put on weight over the years and I go into surgery at 256...I am 5'1 " tall. Yup a shorty lol I have a great, wonderful, and 100% supportive dh named Rob, and three wonderful blessings who are 7, 3, and 1. I will have to spend some time reading the archives I know, but how wonderful to find a list of all the New Englanders. I actually live in Connecticut but after doing alot of research and talking to people I really wanted Dr. Thayer as my surgeon. Even though it's quite a drive, it's worth it, as the moment I met him I was immediatly impressed by him and felt totally comfortable. =o) I'm so exciiiiiiited!! (did I say that already??) hehe Anyways, I hate that I only just found this list lol I will be gone next week. If you are inclined to lift a prayer up for me I would really appreciate it, as would my family!! Oh and I do have a ? for any of you who were patients of Dr. Thayers. They gave me a copy of the diet for after surgery and I read it and it appears to be a blended diet starting from day one? Am I reading this wrong maybe? I have heard from so many other patients of different surgeons that they were on a full clear liquid diet for a while before starting blends so I thought maybe I was missing something. Curious if anyone has had any problems or if this is the norm? Thanks in advance! God bless! Susie

Guest guest
Hi Susie, Welcome to the group. I am also from CT and Dr. Thayer is my doc. Whereabouts in CT do you live (I'm from Putnam---Northeast corner) If you're nearby, maybe we could carpool to meetings sometime. When you first have your surgery you will have nothing by mouth, then ice chips & water, then slowly they will start you on liquids & very soft purees in the hospital. I had no problems with this and the purees were a welcome food because I wanted something to taste!!! The only thing I had trouble with was the sugarfree Carnation Instant Breakfast...still makes me gag! Good luck to you! P.S. I have a follow-up appointment Wednesday, I'd be happy to drop in and see you if you like!! > Hi everyone! Guest guest
Hi Alice! It's nice to meet you! You know I am still a little " eh " about the diet but I will just discuss my concerns with them at the hospital and go from there. lol As for Dr. Thayer, I can't believe how wonderful he is. He called me this afternoon--wanted to make sure I was okay, feeling good, and wanted to know if I had any questions or concerns before the surgery on Monday. I thought it was incredibly thoughtful of him and I really did appreciate it even though I didn't have anything to ask about. =o) Er...I guess I could have asked about the post-op diet lol but didn't think about that HAHA God bless! Guest guest
Hi ! I live in Groton. I am not sure how far that is away from you? Since you didn't use the Instant Breakfast did you try some other type of protien supplement? Just curious, I have read alot about this lately. =o) I would love a visitor if you would like to drop in! I think they said visiting hours are 10-8 or something of that nature...maybe 2-8? hmm...I really do have to find that out. My dh is in the Coast Guard and all of our family is in Georgia (!) so noone is really getting the opportunity to visit me and stuff. My hubby is off work (thank God) and my Mom is flying up tomorrow and will be staying for a month (she's such a saint!)...and my best friend lives in Rhode Island (her dh is also CG lol and she had the RNY about 2 1/2 years ago) will be around some too, but I'm sure I'll be dying for some conversation so I hope you do get a chance to come by! (you can tell me I am talking too much too lol) God bless! Susie > > > > Hi Susie, > Welcome to the group. Guest guest
this was a screening abr. We have a tenative appt for a diagnostic ABR next friday. They are planning to put her out. newbie Hi - welcome! Do you know if the ABR that was done on your daughter was a screening ABR or a diagnostic ABR? The diagnostic ABR would have taken much longer amount of time than the screening ABR. Thanks. Barbara (mom to Tom, 9 years, severe hearing loss and Sam, 7 years, profound hearing loss) wrote--- My name is . My 4 month old adopted daughter, Cassie is in the process of diagnoisis of hearing loss. She appears to hear nothing, although this is a new thing. I swear that she could hear like 2 weeks ago. She failed an OAE yesterday and an audiogram. On 4 of the frequencies at 95 decibles or higher she had slight eye movement (she was asleep) but on like 5 frequencies they got up to 110 decibles and stopped testing with no response. Today she passed an ABR? anyone have experience with this?? What happens next? I have not talked to the peditrician but the person that tested her said that ABR's DO NOT have false postives? Guest guest
Hello guys! Thank you for your responses. I am very upset with the woman who tested Cassie. She stated that no matter what I thought that she could hear and that she was just ignoring us. I know better than that. I know that she could hear us before. Also both sets of our parents are sooooo in denial. They are saying essentially that there is no way for this to be. SHe acts so normal. ABR to be done Friday at 7AM newbie Hi - the screening ABR is just that - a screen to rule out/in the need for further testing. the fact that an OAE (otoacoustic emissions) test showed hearing loss and the ABR didn't just means there's a need for further, more definitive testing. The fact that your daughter is having the diagnostic ABR soon is good - that should tell you what's going on. There definitely are false positives on screening ABRs - not sure who tested your daughter but that's not true a true statement. Please keep us posted! I'll be thinking about you.... SHe acts so normal. One thing you might want to point out to your parents (in -laws) is that young children with hearing losses do appear to be 'normal'. My daughter is profoundly deaf but babbled non-stop just like a hearing baby but eventually tapered off. That is when I discovered that she was not hearing. Guest guest
Hello Angel, Welcome aboard! When ever you have a question, please feel free to ask it. It is by questions that a great many of us have learned how to improve our daily lives. After you have finished reading the www.thyrophoenix.com web site that Topper and have put together, might I also suggest that you read the thyroid.about.com web site. Read these web sites from front to back, side to side....and then ask us any questions that you need help with...never be afraid to ask...it may take a few days for one of us to find the answer for you, however, we will sooner or later help you and the rest of us understand. Check out your local library to see what they have...granted it may be out of date, however it will be a start... Welcome! Guest guest
HI again! I had testing done(I don't have any hard copies of the tests though) and was started off on the lowest dose. I now take 112 mcg of Levothryoxine every day. I was tested each month until my levels were within normal range.. but I was still feeling sluggish all the time. So my doctor raised my dosage a slight bit and now I feel pretty good. I still have to go every few months and have my levels tested. I was also on Lipitor for a month because my cholesterol was quite high. But after a month I was down to 180. Over all I am feeling pretty good but still get tired a lot if I over exert myself. I still have a lot to learn! Guest guest
I missed this one ... I'm glad that you reposted!! Welcome! There are different opinions as to whether or not it's best to remove the damaged gland. Pros and cons to each choice. Since the gland will die eventually anyway, getting rid of the gland right away save having to deal with the sputtering of it for years to come, so we'll concentrate on that positive aspect. I had my gland destroyed by RAI, 15 years ago, so I can speak from the point of view of one with no gland. I think it might be easier to determine dosage BUT it's also a drawback in that if you miss a dose or have a change in lifestyle your body can't pick up the slack, you have to be more vigilant in adjusting your dose, if needed. Have you and your doc discussed hormone replacement yet? Again, speaking as one with no gland function and after 10 years of treatment using synthetics I think natural hormone does us a lot more good, giving us all the hormones and not just T4. You may be just beginning with all of this so you might want to get more familiar with the basics. We have a page set up on our web site that will give you an introduction, from there you can do more research, if you like, or just have a better understanding of what we are talking about here. It will give you a run down of the hormones, the tests and the choices in meds. www.thyrophoenix.com/thyroid_101.htm It wouldn't be a bad idea, in my opinion, to get started on charting yourself, it will help you and your doc (assuming he's a 'work with you doc' and not a 'do as I say doc') determine remaining function after the surgery (thyroidectomy removes MOST of the gland tissue but NEVER all). Some docs chose to do RAI (radioactive iodine) to destroy remaining tissue, if it's still causing problems. You may want to ask about that. www.thyrophoenix.com/self_monitor.htm Never be afraid to ask questions... and if your post gets misplaced, if it's not answered in 24 hours, post again, okay? I'm a bit different from the rest of the group in that my gland wasn't diseased and I didn't have an immune issue (like Hashi's) either, I'm the lucky kid that had the genetic defect resulting in my gland over producing, my going hyper and eventually into thyroid storm. They used the RAI to stop it, leaving me totally dependant on replacement hormone. But I also have the advantage of having survived not only long term hyper, but thyroid storm and after the RAI the misfortune of a bunch of bad docs and years of being undertreated, causing me to go severely hypo. So, sigh, I've lived, survived, both extremes... So.. that's a bit about me.... When is your surgery scheduled? You realize that by admitting that you are a quick study you've opened yourself up to some teasing if you ask for a repeat??? hehehhehehehehehehehe Topper () On Sat, 12 Feb 2005 18:17:27 -0000 "katorr1013" writes: > > Hi all.....I am from Tennessee. Guest guest
I went last week to my GYN, thinking I was going thru perimenopause. I have gain 15 lbs since Sept, I am tired all the time, along with always being cold. She said it sounded more like my thryroid. The test came back yesterday, at 5.62. I call my internal doc, and he said it border line hypothyroid, but didn't want to do anything about it at this time. I understand that 5.5 was their " high, but still normal " , but it obviously is not normal for me, otherwise I would not feel like I do. How do you convince doctors, what is normal for one, may not be normal for you?

Guest guest
Please see the following link published by the AACE, the new high range for TSH is 3.0. A higher than 3.0 lab result would be indicative of Hypothyroidism, which is a LOW thyroid. This is at least partially why you gained 15 pounds recently, assuming you have been eating a normal amount etc. And with a TSH that high, I bet you were eating normally, if not lower than normal amounts. http://www.aace.com/pub/tam2003/press.php Show this to your doctor. And tell him he better " do something " about your low thyroid, despite his ignorance about TSH tests. This is what pisses me off about many doctors. They require so much money, insurance, labs etc., and yet most dont know what they are doing and people are suffering. Based on your labs and symptoms, you are HypoT. The fact that your doctor is not properly educated on thyroid disease, is HIS problem. Dont let him make it your problem. Life is too short. Feel better please, SAMMIE --- Carol wrote: > the test was TSH, in which I have a copy > > Sammie Baker wrote:I'm assuming > this test was for TSH, in which case you > wouldn't be borderline HypoT, you would be > definetely > HypoT. > > Can you find out for sure which test it is?
