I'm curious, as I progress further down the road how distorted will

I be visually based on the corrections being made orthodontically?

I guess I won't be that distorted.. Most people will think I look

the same, but I just feel like this whole process is so medieval. :)

No one looks at people under a microscope like I think they do.

Speaking of medieval, I watched some kid on TLC get his legs and

arms extended by an even nastier process of having breaks made in

his arms/legs, metal devices drilled through his bones and then get

this he had to turn a key twice a day to lengthen his bones!! Over a

period of 8 months he grew by some 11 inches.

If that isn't medieval I dunno what is. If you thought orthognathic

surgery was bad, guess what? As usual, someone else has it way worse

than you. Thank god for that, because if I had it worse than anyone

else I would be really angry.

I'm all excited to get my new jaw.. like I'm buying a new car or

something. I'm just so curious what it will be like to have a

proper bite.. Obviously there will be some aesthetic impact, but the

function part is really cool. I breath through my mouth like a

zombie it must scare the crap out of my girlfriend at night.

Everytime I look in the mirror I try to imagine myself with proper

alignment, and every time I say the same thing " It's gonna be

interestin'! "

I had this dream the other night that I was going in to the

operating room and as I got on the operating table and wired up I

said to the surgeon: " Have fun breaking my face. I know where you

live. "

Analyze that one.

Hi n,

It's true, they may make things worse for you orthodontically to get

you where you need to be for surgery.

I was fortunate - a lot of my problem was skeletal in the face and

was corrected through the use of ALF appliances and cranial therapy.

It's not clear on my before pictures, but I had a maxilla cant (non-

horizontal), and my upper jaw was twisted to the right, and my lower

twisted to the left. As treatment progressed, I could see that my

face was becoming more symmetrical in those areas. The surgery then

fixed the bite and the jaws/chin.

The cranial therapy was responsible for doing subtle shifts in my

facial and cranial bones, supported with the ALF movements.

Wacky, but it worked! And in some cases, my ortho is able to avoid

surgery.

Hey n,

I thought I would mention that they do perform a similar procedure,

as the one you described as lengthing the boys legs, on people's

jaws. Its called " Distraction Osteogenesis " .... You can read about

it at the following link: http://www.uic.edu/depts/doms/. Go to

the " Grand Rounds " area and there will be all medical papers written

on various maxillofacial procedures.
