See, for me it was a genetic defect that involves TSH receptors... I could be pumping out a ton of TSH or non at all and my thyroid wasn't getting the signal.. It would just choose a level to produce at and if something came up in my life it kicked it up a notch... but then wouldn't go down....

As you go through my life... each 'major' thing that happened in my life when I needed to kick life in the butt got me just a bit more hyper... but it happened so consistently, gradually... that I didn't notice it from my side until I went into storm, then, technically, it wasn't me that noticed it either.. it was my new boss... noticing a sudden drop in weight and my uniforms not fitting right. He was the one that called it to my attention...

Then after the first doc told me that there was nothing wrong, even though I KNEW there was... I just kept going cause it was so consistent for me... I was ALWAYS warm, hungry, mind racing, restless, thirsty... HUNGRY that it didn't seem so terribly wrong cause it was ALL THE TIME, your point of reference shifts and it becomes 'normal' to you...

With all the studies and research that they do, on some really STUPID stuff, why don't the research something like this ... since it affects such a huge percentage of the population? I know, I know... don't scream at me... I do know that part of the reason is the it's MOSTLY women that are affected by this stuff so it's a low priority on the list... after all.. what's more important? A body that has sufficient levels of thyroid hormone to allow the individual to have a happy and productive life, or having Viagra so that 60 year old guys can chase 18 year olds???

Well, me and two of my daughters are definitely members of that group ofgenetic folks. We all have Hashi's, and there's no way that it CAN'T begenetic, as there ARE chromosome faults for MOST thyroid diseases. What I'minterested to know is how this connects with the name she gave it, "thyroidhormone resistance"?

Viagra, to some of the guys. They're willing to risk heart attack and seeing in blue for this.

But the part that just amazes me the most is the fact that doctors out there know this, yet they continue to prescribe it! And they're always so worried about the public ordering from overseas, taking OTS products, supplements, etc.....Ha!.....Shows you what the reasoning is.

It is weird... When I first started taking Synthroid I was warned that it was blackmarketed and that I had to protect my pills.. that, depending on the dose of the pill, they could be sold for anything from $5 to $10 EACH! and that if I ran out before I should that I would NOT get a refill. It was explained that they were being used as a diet aid and that, taken incorrectly, they were giving people heart attacks.

Now... can ANY of you believe that taking one or two Synthroid tablets, even together, at the same time, would either produce rapid weight loss OR heart attack???

Now we're being told that suppressed TSH causes osteoporosis... Please, think a minute. Which segment of the population is at greatest risk for osteoporosis? Older women, usually past child bearing age.... and what segment of the population has the highest percentage of folks that have low thyroid function? Same age group.

.... so... if low thyroid function means HIGH TSH.... and SUPPRESSED TSH means osteoporosis.... how come it's the same group of the population that tends to show highest for both?

That's why I don't buy the bull that it's suppressed TSH that causes the calcium problems.... it's using synthetic T4 meds on folks that are getting most of their hormone through replacement and very little from the gland itself AND the fact that getting it via T4 only synthetics that their bodies aren't getting enough Calcitonin AND the fact the T4 only synthetics have a strong tendency to suppress TSH even when given in doses that are insufficient to provide adequate levels of available thyroid hormone....

So we're right back around to it being and issue of knowing the correct medication for the individual... pretty much anyone that has had surgery or RAI most likely has damage parathyroids and needs a new source of calcitonin..... which means taking natural natural or one of the new calcitonin supplements....

EEEKKKK I have to stop... I don't want to go on a war path today.....

Good morning everyone!!! Happy Easter!!!

Well, Topper, I will go on this war dance with ya! I have read everything I could find on suppressed TSH and Osteoporosis. Sorry to say every study done that I have read about were ALL done with Synthetic T4 only drugs... As they keep so many people undertreated OF COURSE there are bone problems.. HYPO causes bone problems, and with connective tissue damage it pouts more stress on the bones. As I haven't been able to afford any blood work in several years, I can;t tell ya what my TSH is but I would be willing to bet it is almost NIL. It was .02 last time I had it tested and I take over double the thyroid now that I was taking then. And ya know what? I have even had a bunion on my left foot that I had for over 20 years go AWAY entirely since I have increased this dosage to where I feel good. ALL my arthritis symptoms are gone, and even my chronic back pain is much lessened but not totally gone, but what do you expect when I have been lifting and grooming 150 pound dogs for 36 years! I would LOVE to have a bone density test as I think it could be some proof for someone that a suppressed TSH does not hurt bones, but can't afford that either.. LOL

Hey...Happy Easter,

I agree about the tsh bone stuff, but just for something to chew

on...my problem is that when the doc says, " oh no you are heading

hyper and we need to worry about osteopirosis (sp?) better get that

tsh back up " I can't help but think who cares about my bones 30

years from now...I want to live a full and active life now. Today.

Happy. I will gladly trade my later quality of life for a better

qualitiy of life today. Am I being foolish? Well appparently not

if Topper is right.

But if bone loss is truly a concern studies show that when little

old ladies work out with just 5 pound weights they regain bone

strength. Weight bearing excersise...5 pounds, thats it! So smarty

pants doc says I have to feel like crap because he believes the bone

thing and in the meantime millions of us cant' find the motivation

to get the mail, let alone exerscise and what damage does that do to

our bones?

I maintain that I'd rather supress my tsh...head into just

barley 'hyper according to lab values not how I feel' and commit to

eating well and excersising and chance the bone issue in exchange

for living my life today. What a waste to look that far into the

future anyway...life is too precious to worry about 30 years from

now. Today...I want to feel excellant today.

Okay I'm done...final note, have you ladies seen a great informative

webite called Gail's Thyroid Tips...

This may be where I say the 5lb bone study with old ladies.

Happy Easter,

I think you kinda hit it on the head, Carol, in two ways.... we need to be up and about and mobile for healthy muscle, blood and oxygen circulation and weight resistance for the bones to give our bodies a chance to be over all healthy.. and we can't do any of that if we are so hypo and so sick and so fatigued and so run down that, well, like me.... sitting on a blasted chair to wash dishes. Think about it... So weak, so easily tired, so easily exhausted with physical exertion that you have to sit to do a five minute job??

And the other point. Do you really want to exist the next 30 years having to ask someone else to go get you a glass of water, to miss the first fantastic morning of spring cause you can't get up the energy to get out of bed. To go through the years not going on picnics or to a movie or fishing or to sit out in the grass.

Think of the most favorite thing that you love to do... got it? Now, imagine NEVER EVER being able to do it again.

Now pick something simple, something that is not really hard to do but gives you joy, a smile, a lift for your day.... Now, imagine that you will NEVER be able to do it again....

That's what we are working toward.. to be able to LIVE, not just exist. To take that walk, enjoy that picnic. Remember me? Several time in the last six months or so I went on virtual vacations... I don't drive and funds are limited... so I set up imaginary adventures. Dorky? Maybe.. but it was because I wanted to have FUN even if I couldn't be out and about or go on a trip... I did it because I WANTED to and did it to the best of my ability.. Beats the heck out of sitting here and not doing anything but exist!

I don't want to simply exist for the rest of my life, a statistic to show that what they are doing kept me alive for sooooo long.... I want to live my life, long or short, as it may be.. but to be able to live, love, laugh, cry... be silly and goofy and cuss a blue streak when I'm mad.

What makes me say that? All these things are things that I lost when I was undermedicated for so long. To sit in a room of people, watching a movie, and everyone laughs but you. The center of yourself is so off, so weak, sore, sick, missing.. that you see nothing there to laugh at. Yet everyone else does.

One of the COOLEST firsts for me was sitting here, listening to the TV while I worked and hearing something funning and laughing out loud, turning my head to look at the TV to see if that's what I really heard. I stopped. It was a WOW moment. I laughed at something I heard.

Only someone that has been there will truly understand what that meant to me.

I had lost that ability for so long that I still take pause when something strikes me funny and I giggle.

I just had another wow moment. To be able to look back at those bad times and not cry... Gosh.. I used to cry all the time. I'd cry cuz it was sunny, cause it was cloudy, cuz my show wasn't on tv, cuz a character on TV missed the bus... I'd cry just because I was awake.... That's not life.

Sigh.... I'm stopping now... it's sunny out, with a gentle breeze coming in through my window.. it smells nice. The TV is on.. I'm watching a documentary about dragons. I just had a piece of homemade fudge. I let it melt on my tongue and now my mouth has that wonderful deep chocolate aftertaste. My hair smells like strawberries, from the conditioner I used in it this morning.

A whole list of things that now make me smile...

It sucks... I mean the test they are doing to prove their point aren't even valid. I could go on and on with this subject.. but I'm sure you know what I mean.

If hyper in and of itself causes osteo, weak bones.... I'd REALLY love to hear someone explain what happened to me.... long story short (a rarity for me! hehehehe) I cut my finger badly, they did microsurgery to put it back together. I had ten days off work for it to heal. It continued to bleed for the first several days of that and when I was finally able to remove the bandage it was so soaked and caked with blood that I had to soak it and peel it off in layers. When I went in to have the stitches removed my skin had grown completely over them and they had to cut the skin open to pull the stitches.. I wore a split while at work to protect the finger from injury and a few days after going back to work I got the end of the finger crushed under the weight of a box, folks heard me scream and came running.

I went in for xrays and the fingertip was broken, you could see the break in the xray. I went to my regular doc when I got back to town three days later and he took another xray. No break. So my hyper body, just a couple of years before actually going into thyroid storm, was still able to heal bone breaks (yes it was a small bone) in just a few days. The doc compared the two sets of xrays and the second showed NO break.. it had healed....

So, if a hyper body has weak bones... how come I healed so quickly?
