I finally brought Bradley to a PMR doc and he measured his legs and found

one a half inch shorter. WE now have inserts and he walks much better. He has

the flat feet and the balace disorder.

Dylan's toes are the same and I would guess he does use the big toe to dig

in with. He also uses his feet like hands with the big toe as a thumb. Now

that he has shoes on and is walking more this doesn't happen as much. When

he was younger he looked like a baby monkey passing a ball back and forth

between his hands and feet.

We haven't done inserts.

Hi All,

I know I don't contribute much to the list these days but I do read all the

e-mails and try to keep up to date.

Jack saw the podiatrist last Tuesday. He had been referred in May by his

physio to see if inserts for his shoes would help with his balance and

hyperflexibility. Jack also has very flat feet.

The podiatrist was very interested in Jack's feet and even photographed

them

for teaching use. He said that Jack is using his big toe to grip the ground

and using it as an extra balance tool. He has given us inserts for his shoes

which should help put his feet in the correct position and hopefully help

his

walking.

Jack seems to be a bit more wobbly with the inserts in his shoes but we are

going to persevere and hopefully things will improve over the next week or

so.

Has anyone else had experience of these inserts and did they help?

I have put a photo of Jack's feet in the photo section under 'Jack'. He has

very large big toes and a large space between the big toe and the one next

to

it. Is this common in CHARGE?

At first I thought Aubrie had flat feet and large big toes too, but then

I looked at Jack's photo and they are not exactly the same. Aubrie has

a large big toe because she got it from me. She doesn't have the space

between toes. Her flat little feet are more like duck feet.

This is very interesting and I look forward to hearing what becomes of

things.

Hi Elaine,

Jeff's feet look EXACTLY like Jack's, right down to EVERY toe!!! Jeff

too, is very flat footed. He also has used his feet like his hands. He has

made us laugh many a time because of his 'gifted' feet. He has never worn

inserts--no one ever suggested to me that he should. He too has learned to

compensate, and walks rather stiff legged, with the classic CHARGE gait. He

walks very well on level surfaces, even tho he is quite slow. But hates

walking on unlevel ground and is quite insecure unless someone is holding

his arm or hand. However, I believe that is more due to his vision loss

than balance. Let me know what you find out.
