Guest guest
Dear , I am type O pos and the wait list for this type is long as well. I think even longer than AB. This is why my docs want me to multi list. My limited understanding is that O is a universal donor not a universal receiver. I wonder if AB is the same? Guest guest
, call and I believe hit #4…ask for Donna in Dr. Weber’s office…she will be able to give you all the information, as well as if UC is doing live liver transplants…I believe they are…tell Donna I asked you to call… Anne Tinnell… Blood type, transplant issues Hi everyone, I seen mention in the group of a few members that go to the University of Cincinnati. I went there at one time, but had decided to switch to Starzll, when UC stopped doing living donors. (I think they may have resumed doing them since.) I was never seen by starzll, because I got pregnant a few months before my appointment. I had thought that my blood type was B+, this was what I was told by my mother. When I was going through the listing process, I had two people step forward and offer to be living donors for me. However, during my pregnancy, I learned that my blood type is actually AB+. I was doing some research last night on the UNOS site. It looks like there are few people with AB blood type waiting for livers, but the wait seems quite long. I know that blood type AB is the universal recipient for blood, however, can anyone tell me if it is the same for organs? Meaning, could I get a living donation from someone with B+ blood? I couldn't find any information on this on any of the sites. Just my luck, rare disease, rare blood type. Now that we're starting to look at listing again, I may want to have these living donors tested. I hope everyone is doing well! Guest guest
Definitely multi-list, no matter where you list in the US…my husband wouldn’t be alive if we hadn’t… Re: Blood type, transplant issues Dear , I am type O pos and the wait list for this type is long as well. Guest guest
According to UNOS data, AB blood types actually have the shortest average wait list time -- looks like it averages around 200 days nationally. AB patients in our region wait around 170 days, according to UNOS data. Larry's hepatologist at UAB said that in the five years he's been there he's never had an AB patient leave the hospital without a new liver, except one woman who passed on an available liver because she was doing well and her MELD was only 16. Currently, there are only 12 AB patients on the wait list in our region (region 3) and only 1 at UAB. People with AB can accept livers from any other blood type donor. Though AB is a rarer blood type, the number of donor livers available to those with AB is greater. We consider Larry's AB+ blood type to be a blessing, especially as we look at the data on the UNOS site.
