Pam

is in public school..Speech is primary mode of communication...This teacher

said that the auditory numbers are just wrong. has no auditory memory

issues..not even that I was interpreting them wrong just that they were

wrong....No explanation....She said is doing " just fine " ...I have had an

issue with ASD for some time...they were angry that I refused to have

sign..BUT I refused to let ASD begin their total communication package...ASD's

program of total communication consisted of FM trainer used by regular ed

teacher,HIT 45 minutes per week pulling out of class using sign in an

office space ..alone ..no other children or other teachers...No one else was

being asked to sign to and often the HIT lessons were not what was being

taught in the class...the bulk of her lessons consisted of asking brain

quest questions..she never taught in the classroom setting. Is that total

communication?? Plus a huge sticking point is that the director from ASD said

she doesn't work for me so she will not talk to me...I'm sorry but how can you

make that statement? True you do not work for me however you work with my son

and your services have to at least appear to be helpful. has a bright

future with the right services and ASD is proving to be a bad joke..When they

started ASD told me they have taught many children with CHARGE..you can teach

anyone but did they learn?

And what nerve to say Dr. Morse's numbers are just wrong...with nothing to back

it up.

I need cold hard written facts to sway me...I'm sure Dr. Morse will be pleased

that a teacher of the deaf said he is just wrong..

Hey will Perkins come down to do an eval???I already tried to get an out of

state eval where we went to Dartmouth..school hands down refused. That is when

Dr. Morse came to us.

When CREC was giving services they actually cared about all the information

from outside sources and actually welcomed it....The HIT from CREC researched

the vision component...ASD has never ever considered 's vision issues...It

is hard to go from great to blah( I have another word I like to use there but

I'll keep it clean)

However, I have found some unlikely allies in the school principal and the

teachers...I guess that is the bonus..

Thanks

Ellen,

I, too, am confused. Where is in school? Is he in public school? Does he

use speech as his primary mode of communication? Is this teacher saying that

his deafness is not the problem, but " auditory memory " is a problem?

You are right about about Dr. Morse--he is very experienced.

Still sick and thus probably foggy, but must post.

A Perkins' eval, last I knew (several years ago) was a bargain at @$250.

If you plan things right (i.e. coordinate with P.), you can stay in a guest

house which should be fully stocked with food and everything else you

need (thus cost of the trip goes way, way down). I haven't read the

proposed (or possibly enacted) new IDEA rules, but you should be due an

independent eval. We've done this twice, so don't hesitate to ask me

questions --- and if I'm wide off the mark in my reply, I apologize. My family

tells me to talk with no one when I am sick...

Note: and Pam, I apologize, Perkins can be extraordinarily slow in

sending its eval report. However, a phone conference is always a good

idea. These are great folks.

Martha

What is ASD? Arizona, Alabama, Alaska??? I'd really like to know

because I visited Arizona for prior to sending her to Perkins.

ASD=American School for the Deaf in CT...I'm just curious if the school would

pay for another eval since they just paid for Dr. Morse
