Pam, how do you handle interpreting? We have decided (actually our daughter

decided) she did not want us to interpret. And it seems to work OK for her.

I think you meant me - Barbara. Re: interpreting, our boys both are oral. It

makes it hard when they line up and my little son, who is deaf, is towards the

back because he's one of the lowest belts. But our friend, Steve, is one of the

teachers and knows the boys really well and has a really loud, deep voice. Mrs.

DelPorte, who's the lead instructor (she's a 4th degree black belt), attended

the inservice the school conducted early in the school year and so is really

cognizant of the need to look at both guys, etc. I was so touched that she

cared enough about Tommy and Sam to attend. We're very, very lucky that we're

in a school where the instructors " get it " - communication hasn't been a

problem.

We're in the Lebanon (NH) Blue Wave school - Blue Wave is a Taekwondo

organization throughout New England. I've noticed other deaf adults who have

black belts in other schools within Blue Wave so it seems they are deaf/hoh

friendly which makes it so nice. And more role models for Tommy and Sam.

It's really been a great experience for our guys - the discipline involved, etc.

Thanks for your nice notes!

Barbara
