All I know about AFOs and small children is that they usually adapt well if they are properly fitted, and they love being able to get around better. You'll need to check carefully for red spots to make certain the AFOs are comfortable and properly fitted. Kat

Guest guest
Bill and Malynda, My daughter got her first pair of AFOs when she was 7. I think the younger the kids are, the more easily they adapt. Life is still a big adventure at this age and getting different kind of feet is just part of the adventure. At least this was our experience. I find more resisitance as they get older and begin to be self-conscious. My daughter is now 10 and really doesn't want to wear them to school anymore. We took the summer off from wearing them to see what would happen, and now she is getting very tight in the heel cords again and turning her feet in badly. I am hoping the doctors will agree with me to another round of serial casting and a new pair of AFOs as opposed to surgery. We really aren't ready for major surgery yet but our orthopedist seems to think that is the next step. I hope not. Good luck with your 4 yr old. Kids are resiliant at that age!
