What activites are you allowed to do at your comm center > when you are working. ie read a book, do puzzles, scrapbook, play on your own > lap top computer, pay bills, do homework, play games with your coworkers, etc? All of the above (except play games w/coworkers as we have only one dispatcher on duty at a time), plus surf the web and watch TV. Basically we can do almost anything, so long as it is transparent to the units and public (i.e. they can't tell, either by background noise or delayed response to phone or radio, that we have been doing anything but waiting at their beck and call). A pretty reasonable criteria... Roy Mumaw CAPD Arroyo Grande
Guest guest
Christy, I hope all centers that are of the less-busy sort allow some sort of activity that keeps the mind active and ready. I think the key is to be able to respond to your calls within the department guidelines and with the efficiency the department requires. It would be helpful if you listed the restrictions your department is considering. There is a vasty range of activities allowed within our centers, but I think the main thing is that we stay alert and able to do our jobs. We have quite a bit of leeway in our department, but the minute one person abuses that leeway, there will be restrictions applied to all of us in the center. I think the following comment is worth repeating: " Basically we can do almost anything, so long as it is transparent to the units and public (i.e. they can't tell, either by background noise or delayed response to phone or radio, that we have been doing anything but waiting at their beck and call). Guest guest
We are usually fairly busy beginning this time of year up until November or so (on the night shift). Seems when it's nice out people don't know when to go to bed. However, in the winter, it can be several hours without the phone ringing or the radio going off... several of us do little crafty things...I sew. Many of us bring books or homework...do our bills...one guys is a hockey coach and he does all his admin stuff... I don't understand how some people can just sit there and stare off into space...maybe it's my ADD, but I would go insane!! Mkatt

The way it is explained to us is this: " we encourage use of the internet for research purposes, but use of internet resources for personal use is prohibited " . The internet is too valuable a resource <<< So when a caller calls in wanting info -- for instance directions, or the hours of bus service, or how to find something they want personally on the web like the USGS earthquake site, do you classify it as " personal " for them and not do it or do you do it? Me, I do it for them. I figure it goes back to the " you may be the only contact this person has with the police " and figure if I have a moment to provide them with the information its good customer service and community relations. So far no one has said no to - - although in a way it does count as personal for the citizen. And I've gotten a few really odd ball requests. What do you do? Guest guest
I will probably be on someone's bad list, but if you enjoy IM people on MSN, they have come out with a web based site that doesn't require downloading. webmessenger.msn.com This site lets you have a Java based IM. I was able to talk the other morning (around 4am) when things were pretty much over for the night, to a good friend in Beijing, China who I go storm chasing with. It sure makes the night go by a lot faster when it is extremely slow. nc911@...
