Guest guest
Hi All, My 4 year old boy uses Phonak Microlink FM. He has Phonak Novo Forte programmable hearing aids and he wears only one boot (for his better ear). He started wearing his FM since almost a month and I have a problem with his boot that goes to his hearing aid. There is a tiny switch in the boot and there are three options, the switch always needs to be in the middle which means the FM is on. But sometimes when my son comes back from school I observed that the switch is going to off position. I am observing this problem more often since a week. Eventhough my son is not touching the switch the boot is going to off position, probably it's interfering with his color or jacket etc. Is there anyway I can stop the tiny switch moving? I mean I want to keep the switch always on. Also I dont use FM at home as I feel I dont need it, as my son is always close to me. Sometimes I feel that if he get used to FM, it might be harder for him to follow me without FM? he might be used to always hear something that goes directly into his ear? is this true. Please help me with my questions. My son has moderatley severe to severe loss in his better ear. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thank You, Sirisha. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
Guest guest
You could ask the audiologist if the ML55 boots are compatible with the Novo Fortes. My daughter has used the Phonak Pico Fortes and Pico nets with the ML55 boots. That boot has only 2 switch positions, FM and FM+Mic. So the boots are receiving the FM input from both positions. The only thing you need to consider is that when the switch is in the FM position, he will not receive input from his hearing aid mic- he will only hear what is coming from the FM and not from anyone talking directly to him. We have not had problems with the switch easily moving, perhaps your son's boots are defective. My daughter was diagnosed at age four with a moderate loss. I didn't use the FM at home because she did not seem to need it (her expressive and receptive language skills were fully developed before she had a sudden hearing loss). However, Carol Flexer has written several articles stressing the need to use the FM at home. She advocates getting good sound to the kids in order to help learn language. Hope this helps, , mom to (9,HAs), (7,no loss), (almost 4, Clarion CI 7/99) Help on FM, Phonak Microlink MLx Hi All, My 4 year old boy uses Phonak Microlink FM. Guest guest
Hi Shirisha, We also just started using the microlink, but my daughter leaves everything at school, so I don't know about the little switch- maybe yours are loose?? I do notice that my daughter seems to be saying " what " more often at home- maybe because she is used to the fm system at school and we don't use one at home. I also worry that she won't use her visual cues as much because she'll have more verbal inputs at school. Guest guest
Phonak.com has a " contact us " where you can e-mail them your question and they will e-mail you back. They also sent us a Phonak " goodie bag " when I asked them a question. Randie Chubin Margie (7) moderate/moderate to severe, EVAS Eli (4) and Mollie (1), hearing From: im3carfan3@... There was a remote available and when the FM was turned on with the remote, it didn't matter what position the switches were in. Maybe you could see if this is available for you. Guest guest
Dear Randie, Thanks for your response. My sons tiny swich for his boot is not loose but looks like it's interfering with his jacket sometimes. But I will ask Phonak a question and see what there answer will be. My son is using his FM since a month and I also observed him saying 'what?' a lot these days. He is 4 now and he is wearing his hearing aids since Dec 1999 and he was fine without his FM last year. I feel like he is used to hearing through FM now and not paying much attention. He had a hearing test done this August and his hearing is stable. He has moderately severe to severe loss in his better ear and has only one boot. My son also has cold and congesion and this might be one of the reasons why he is saying 'what?' a lot. I think may be it's better not to use FM at home, so that he will be used to both (hearing with and without FM). I dont know I am correct. Not all people can wear FM and talk with him, so I am concerned about this. Thank you and I just wanted to share my thoughts. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks again, Sirisha. >Hi Shirisha, >We also just started using the microlink, but my daughter leaves everything >at school, so I don't know about the little switch- maybe yours are loose?? >I do notice that my daughter seems to be saying " what " more often at home- >maybe because she is used to the fm system at school and we don't use one >at >home.
