I LOVE GOOFY!!! He's my favorite character!! :) Dawn -----Original Message-----From: Sue Sent: Saturday, September 23, 2000 7:53 PMTo: OSSG-NewEnglandegroupsSubject: Re: Depression/Food IssuesHi Trish,This is Sue- I think we met at Dr, Thayer's last meeting. Reading all these posts about people being depressed is a little scary, but it's comforting to know you're not the only one. I think we may have to look at the depression as a seperate issue as far as recovery goes. I believe that for myself at least, the depression came first and obesity was the result. I always thought I was depressed about being fat, but that is only one thing I hate about myself. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait till it's my turn for surgery. It will be a wonderful first step in working toward my goal of good health- mentally and physically- but I have no illusions that the surgery in and of itself will be the instant fix that many of us crave. I think the depression may be something we have to deal with in some way forever, just like diabetes, but at least we won't have all that weight dragging us down. I know part of my problem is that I hide in my house instead of going out and having fun. So maybe a good replacement for the comfort food we won't be able to eat anymore would be to just go out and have some fun since it will be much easier to do after the surgery.(I hope!) And in the meantime, it's fun and encouraging to read all the goofy chatter that goes on on this list.I hope to see you at the October NWH meeting but if I don't, good luck on the 12th!Sue > Hi > I have been reading your posts for a while. Hi,

I need to add my 2 cents....Depression is not caused just by food issues...

We are mostly women. Woman are much more likely to suffer from depression.

Some of us

use food as the cure.... Some of us seek counseling, take meds., walks,

exercise...whatever. Being woman we also have hormonal issues going on . This

is affected byweight loss because estrogen is stored in fat cells..

BOTTOM LINE... get help...see a therapyst..if meds are needed, so be it..most

of the surgeons that do this surgery have therapist in the office..if you

need to see them...

Years ago it was a stigma to see a " shrink " ... no it's the norm. I am on

meds. and have been since I was 35. I started early

menopause....(perimenopause).... almost 7 years later, I am still

perimnopausel (much to hubby's dismay)... I have had major ups and down since

my surgery....some days are a real struggle ...others are great...

Just remember 2 things....seek help before it gets worse.... Use this group,

that's what it's all about.. SUPPORT...

Advice for the day: If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do

what it says on the aspirin bottle: Take two and keep away from children.
