Guest guest
Jim, Also glad that you are able to not fall asleep. As I stated to Maureen, I was not able to do this but I never ever ever missed a call nor did I sound like I was tired. Thank you for your input.... Guest guest
I know this subject has been about " reply'd " to death, but I couldn't keep my big mouth shut until I had commented on " resting one's eyes " . I've done it without sleeping. As I mentioned before, instead of lights we can dim in dispatch, we have " landing strip lighting " all bright, all the time. It just about makes your eyes fall out on your cheeks after 8 hours, and if you wear contacts, it's unmerciful. I have put drops in and shut my eyes to rest them, making sure that while on Candid Camera, I'm tapping my fingers or making some other motion so there is no doubt that I am awake and listening to mostly nothing at 04:00 (after the bar fights and jail transports). As I have said, I do not condone sleeping on mids, especially after a whole day of activity, but honestly, there is such a thing as " resting your eyes " and not being asleep. Guest guest
Bottom line is we all do what we have to do to survive and unfortunately we all can't pick what shift we would like to work nor do we have any control over the weekly or bi-weekly rotating shifts our agencies impose on us. We also can't control a personal crisis which may erupt during our off duty hours affecting our sleeping pattern for a day or two . It just sounded to me as if we were getting somewhat hostile over this subject and I felt the need to come out if hiding and put my 2 cents in. I am not condoning sleeping in deep REMS on a daily basis while being paid to work. However, I think there may be times when we could be a little more tolerant of each others opinions and a little more understanding of each others job survival techniques. If someone is posing a problem to public safety because of work habits their agency should be dealing with them. I just don't think we should be spending so much time criticizing each other in here over issues like this. Has anyone seen the commercial where the boss walks in on the employee with his head on the desk (asleep)? On hearing the door open the employee pops his head up and states he was putting in his contacts using no hands cause it is more sanitary. :-) Remember..... First do no harm......especially to each other. Lucille NWPD - New Jersey
Guest guest
<We also can't control a personal crisis which may erupt during our off duty hours affecting our sleeping pattern for a day or two> I could be mistaken, but I don't think that's what anyone was taking issue with. It's the chronic sleepers, in my opinion. <unfortunately we all can't pick what shift we would like to work nor do we have any control over the weekly or bi-weekly rotating shifts our agencies impose on us.> I think we can all agree on that. However, one does have a responsiblity to be as awake and alert as possible. I'm pretty sure we all knew going into this field that shiftwork was/is a given. <may be times when we could be a little more tolerant of each others opinions and a little more understanding of each others job survival techniques.> Granted, I didn't read each and every posting, but I didn't think people were being intolerant. Did I miss something? <Remember..... First do no harm......especially to each other.> I agree wholeheartedly!! However, for the several thousand of us that do our jobs unfailingly and without incident, there is always *someone* who doesn't. And that someone can singlehandedly do more damage to the public's opinion of 911 dispatchers/calltakers than any amount of self-promotion can do the opposite. On the other hand, this is/was a discussion about sleeping on/off duty on the midnight shift. mkatt A. Katt Bay County Central Dispatch 9-1-1 1228 Washington Ave. Bay City MI 48708 kattm@... If you hadn't taken my words out of context you would have realized that I was in agreement about habitual sleepers. I don't think that " resting your eyes " is the same as habitual sleeping on the job. And if I'm not mistaken, there were a number of references and criticisms to what was in my opinion ( if I am allowed to have one), closing your eyes for more than a nano second. I personally don't care for that " jump in your face " attitude which is why I usually don't even bother having an opinion in here. That is why I said I think there may be times when we could be a little more tolerant of each others opinions. Thanks for the reinforcement!
