Re: INR value in MELD computation

Awhile back I saved a site that formulated your MELD score. I was

afraid to try it, not sure that I really wanted to know. Yesterday I

went back to it and couldn't do it because I didn't know what this INR

value was. Can someone tell me what the INR is in the MELD computation?

It is listed as a international normalized ratio value but it doesn't

tell you how to know what this is.

Thanks

Lee

Hi Lee;

INR is a " calculation " from the prothrombin time (the time until a

fibrin clot forms, measured in seconds), and is explained in depth at:

http://www.enw.org/Research-INR.htm

It may not be possible for you to calculate an INR [if it was not

reported] because it will depend on each lab's reagents at the time

of the PT test.

I hope this helps a little. I hope is doing well and continuing

to put on some of his lost weight.

Best regards,

Thanks Dave, I knew that you would know the answer and considered

emailing you privately but then I thought others might also be

wondering.

I will save this email. RIght now I don't see a prothrombin time in his

lab work.

I am going out to see Bill the first week in Dec. His weight is holding

at the moment and we are anxious about what will happen as he drops

down his prednisone. He will see his Dr. on the Christmas break.

My best to you and your son.

Hopefully Bills doc won't alter Bills Pred until after New Years. I've benefited from wise counsel of several gastros over the years who advised against med changes (up or down) thought his period as most of us do a lot of one time a year eating, traveling, stress, etc.etc. The thinking goes, so if your disease seem to flare (or remit) how do you know it was because you just lowered (or raised) the Pred. or was it Auntie 's Pecan Pie? Anyway, food for thought.
