well as you know michael took ashley to the hospital for his sixth visit to give

me

a break and what do you know, they have decided to do something! Typical! They

are

going to remove the nail and trying to do it under local. I am sitting her

twiddling my thumbs.....worried...we decided it best if i didnt go since he

might

think it was a really big deal and play up.....that sounds like them back

now...gotta go see my baby!

would you believe it.......the doctor removed the nail and found a 3cm splinter

down the

length of his thumb! Poor , it must have been so painful and he has

suffered that

for almost 3 weeks. Bless him. He has been so good. He was so brave at the

hospital

only crying a little as the local anaesthetic went in. I am so proud of him.

No wonder

his thumb looked so red and swollen and green around the nail. I cannot believe

they

didn't pick this up earlier. I phoned his nursery where he did it and we can

only

assume that as he played with the cars (he was running them backwards and

forwards on a

wooden bench in the quiet area) that he somehow managed to scrape off a splinter

of wood

and ram it down the side of his nail into his thumb when he bashed the two cars

together! It makes me feel sick just thinking about it. So, he is now just

like Mr

Bump with a big bandaged thumb and we go back for visit number 7 on Thursday to

have the

dressing changed. He is also on his third lot of antibiotics!

for those of you who dont know the whole story, this is a quick recap.......i

also have a

question...how come the splinter was not picked up on the x-ray? was it because

it was

wood? i find it strange it wasn't picked up before. his thumb looked a mess

and just

wasn't getting any better even after so much time......

thursday (almost 3 weeks ago) - ashley bashed two cars together at

nursery, blood the lot, came home with plaster and sore thumb

saturday - thumb looked no better atall, michael was at le mans, so i

took him up to A & E where it was x-rayed and they said it was not broken

but infected....went home with sling and antibiotics

tuesday - follow up appointment - no better and thumb and wrist was

being held awkwardly by ashley (after today we realise that was probably

because he was in so much pain) so they put it in a plaster cast and

sent us home with more antibiotics

wednesday - took off plaster cast - looked a little better so they put

another plaster cast back on and told us to come back on tuesday

tuesday - went back, took of cast, looked about the same, not really any

better, maybe a little - it was difficult to tell since i hadnt seen it

for a week, sent home, told to keep him off nursery and no contact

sports

friday - follow up appointment - still no better but the doctor said he

didnt feel the need to do anything but keep an eye on and come back

tuesday

tuesday (today) - michael took ashley to give me a break and, what do

you know, they decided to do something! Bloody typical ! anyway, they

put in a local anaesthetic (ashley was so brave, despite a few tears)

and removed the nail from his thumb and found.......a 3cm long

splinter! The doctor was amazed that something so big was there...we

now realise why his thumb was so infected, swollen and sore and the

doctor couldn't believe how ashley hadn't complained! Bless him. so

now the splinter is out and he is all bandaged up and on another course

of antibiotics and we go back on thursday to have it redressed!

Oooer. I feel wobbly just thinking about it. Well done, . Brave lad.

At least you now have the problem properly diagnosed and dealt with.

Hopefully this will be your last contact with casualty this year and you can ask

them to remove your name from the seat in the waiting room!
