Hi, I thought since there were so many ?'s about fenugreek I would post

this link that I think might be helpful. It's a bunch of information on

all kinds of herbal remedies for increasing your milk supply.

Just go to the page and then click on the link for fenugreek.

How often do you think you would have to pump after a feeding to increase

your supply as you illuded to (double your production in 10 days)? Would you

think every feeding or a few a day. I am always interested in increasing

supply remedies.

The way it was explained to me was that by pumping after every feeding, you

increase your supply 10%... times 10 days = 100% -- double your supply.

Since mine weren't demanding to be fed at all and I had to wake them every

two hours, it wasn't much more effort to attach the pump to my breast as my

baby finished nursing off that side. I was essentially pumping one breast

while I nursed from the other, then spending about 5-10 more minutes

pumping the other (until I got no more drops or mist out). For those last

few mins that I pumped the last breast, I laid my baby across my legs to

let them burp, or cuddled them in my arms.

Once my babies got stronger and their sucks improved, they were more than

happy to maintain my supply on their own without needed the pump. I think

overall, I did this for just about 2.5 weeks. Anything I pumped, I gave

back to them in the SNS at the next feeding. Since it was only going to be

at room temp for less than 2 hrs, I just set everything up so that when it

was time to nurse again, it was ready to shake and go.

The biggest benefit to your baby that isn't sucking well or gaining well is

that the milk pumped after a feeding is higher in fat, and when they get it

at the next feeding, it satisfies their hunger better, which makes them a

little hungrier at the next feeding, too.

I would think that if you're not building your supply because of an

emergency with your baby, pumping after a feeding as frequently as possible

would be enough. I just made sure I pumped after each feeding since my

little babies *had* to have extra ASAP.

I guess now would be a good time to add that I had a breast reduction in

91, and I apparently didn't have the type of surgery that severed the milk

ducts, but I did have issues with let-down, since the milk ducts weren't

where they were intended to be. Wish I had known what I know now before I

had that surgery!!

In a discussion on another list about fenugreek to increase supply, an

herbalist wrote to say that if a mother gets headaches or nausea from using

too much fenugreek, she can

" cut the Fenugreek dose and add some Blessed Thistle. Often this

combination will reap results just as good as Fenugreek alone without the

side effects from too much. "

I imagine this would help with those who dislike the new " eau de fenugreek "

body scent, too! FWIW, Mother's Milk tea, a commercial tea sold in grocery

stores even (near health items like vitamins), has both fenugreek and

blessed thistle.

,

Thanks for the info. It makes sense to me. If there is a next time for me, I

think this is something I will try. I just hope I remember it when (if) that

time comes. I am also storing my info in case I become a LLL leader. All

suggestions are welcome.
