Guest guest
Stevie, I would go as long as you feel comfortable. If its been a long time and you are awake and full breasts, see if you can gently wake him he might wake easily. If you think its been to long wake him. Trust yourself. If you just wake up and can go back to sleep without waking him then great. I wouldn't let him sleep much longer than two hours in the day. This is all just for now. He's a little guy and your milk needs to get established. Once he's older and your milk is flowing then let him sleep when he is tired. Wendi Re: fenugreek From: ST3PH3@... (Steph) Thanks girls!!! Guest guest
Stevie, The problem is that your body will catch up with his hunger in about 48 hours, but when you give formula your body doesn't work to catch up so you are always at a deficit. Is it that he is really hungry or does he have a very high sucking need? Does he suck his fingers at all? Will he suck yours? If he wants formula he should be nursing. You never really have empty breasts, as milk is always being made. If you nurse him instead of the formula in a couple days you'll have more milk and the gnawing will slow down. Sounds like he has thrush. Other people on the list are better with thrush. My dd wasn't much of a sleeper. Have you tried wearing him to sleep in a sling by walking? It can be a great tool for a reluctant sleeper. Once they're asleep you can lay them down sling and all. Wendi Re: fenugreek From: ST3PH3@... (Steph) You girls DO give great advice & support Last night was so bad I can't get to sleep at night. Every nght he is up for 3-4 hrs. just looking around. I guess it could be worse & he could be crying. I don't understand that supplamenting is hurting my supply. The reason I say so is this: if he completely empties me & chews for an hour at least, which he always does, then I feed him 2 hours later, & he does it again how does that hurt my milk?? I don't gve him formula in leau of the breast, always after if he wants more. I understand that allowing him time on an empty breast lets my body build up more milk, so I try not to cut that short. But don't you thnk that sometimes they just are very hungry ?? I know that as adults we are consistant in what we eat at meals...but aren't there some meals that are larger than others?? Just b/c we are hungrie rat that particular time? The offerings of formula are not at every feeding...he is also very gassy, stuggle all the time to get him to burp. Even with just bmilk he is gassy. I have heard yo all talk about dairy & have decided to stop eating it...I figured it's worth a try. I also think that has thrush, small little white balls in cheeks & under tongue?? So far I'm not affected, have no blisters or cracks. What should I be feeling if I have it??? Thanks ladies.... Guest guest
Thanks girls for discussin this on my behalf:) I have to go back to work in May & it wil be almost impossible to pump for keeping up the supply. I wil be able to take 5-10 minutes to relieve myself. If I can do that 2x in a shift then there will be at least a bottle of bmilk for daddy to give him. I did this with my dd & just wasn't as persistant as I know I could be this time. Thanks to all of your support & info I had PLENTY of milk at night & morning & did it for 3 months. I will be very happy achieving 6 months, but one year is the goal. Like you have all said...any is better than none. Guest guest
About supplementing... I have recently gone back to work and I have to pump. I am only gone about 5 hours at a time and Kaitlyn only takes about 4 oz in that amount of time and usually it isn't that hard to get 4 oz. But sometimes I find myself counting every drop. When Katilyn goes the the sitter I take however much milk I had pumped for the day along with some formula just in case she didn't have enough milk to last her the 5 hours. My sitter has only had to mix up the formula one time and Kaitlyn didn't even take very much of it. When I am with Kaitlyn I only nurse her.. I only use the formula as a last resort. I really don't like giving it to her because it makes her spit up where my breast milk doesn't. That's just my experience with supplementing. Kristi- mom to Katilyn, 10 wks old! Guest guest
I decided to go ahead and buy some fenugreek even though I told I would do what she suggested and pump after every feeding. I can't pump after every feeding. In the morning I feed him before I go to work and as soon as he's done eating I'm out the door. Then I come home for lunch, feed him, make a sandwich to take with me, and go back to work. That's two feedings I would miss and I value my sleep to much to pump at night :-) Anyway...I was wondering what amount of fenugreek those of you that are taking it are taking. The more milk you can remove from your breasts, the more milk you will make. You can save the expressed milk in your freezer for adding to baby's food later, using on scrapes and cuts, or to make pudding for the baby! (Heck, I've used hindmilk fat to make butter in my bread machine!! It added the pounds onto my toddler in no time!) Someone told me that when you pump hindmilk after a feeding, you can double your milk supply in 10 days. And there's no smell. Guest guest
, Thank you so much for all that info. Wendi Re: fenugreek At 06:09 PM 4/9/99 , you wrote: >, > >I know you don't sell them but what is your recommendation for a pump? It sounds like you have an abundance of milk. > >Wendi > I don't have an abundance of milk anymore as my youngest nursling is approaching 16 months and nurses mostly at night, but maybe 6-7 times total in a 24-hour period. However, I *have* battled my milk supply... It seemed that even though I had plenty of milk, and that I could successfully pump several ounces in the early weeks of my second child's life, she wasn't able to nurse well enough to work past jaundice... and I really didn't want to supplement. The thought was that if I could build an " oversupply " to get as much milk to her as quickly as possible before she fell asleep, it would help her work past the jaundice so that she would have energy to nurse. It did work, but it was a *huge* PITA. I have used these pumps: an electric MagMag -- not automatic suction, but " fingertip controlled " a Medela classic, hospital grade pump, with a clear front cover, at the hospital a Medela Lactina Select, fully automatic with cycling selection and a manual Medela breastpump (more details at the end) Of the these, I mostly preferred the classic. It was just awesome. With my first child, he was nursing so well that he gained more than his birth weight by day three, and the OB discharged me on a Sunday, and my son the following Monday... it was a hosp policy not to d/c babies on weekends. So they brought me a pump to express milk, and I got several ounces of bright yellow colostrum with that. (Liquid gold, they say!) It was so good that when I first put it to my breast and turned it on, I got a let-down on the second suck-release cycle, and the release cycle felt as if it were my baby going " puh " at my breast. Truly amazing. Rarely found in rentals, but often in hospitals. [i ended up refusing the early d/c for me, since I wanted to room-in with my son, but I did have a short break during the afternoon to take a shower at my own house!] With him, we ended up moving across the country when he was just three months old, and thinking that I could bottle feed him while we drove (DH was in a separate vehicle), I would be able to save time... it ended up that it gave him some serious nipple preference... and when we tried going back to the breast, he just screamed and I gave up. I sure wish I had known someone then who would've said, " Hey, starve his suck, not his tummy! " and helped me get him back to breastfeeding! That's when my m-i-l gave me the MagMag that she found at a store for $40... It was horrible. You have to press a button to start the suck cycle, and release the button to end it. You can't buid up enough suction very quickly, and that means there's little stimulation going on at the breast... and that means less production over time. If I had known that using that pump was NOT going to help me maintain my supply for breastmilk bottle feedings, I know I wouldn't have tried it and had gone back to a Medela! Anyways... (It's also very similar to the Evenflo electric pump... and just as ineffective.) With my second child, I rented the Lactina select, and the beauty of the " select " is that there is a knob that lets you select how frequent the pump cycles suck-release, plus the pump itself lets you regulate how much suction you want against your nipples... minimum, medium and maximum. That way you can make it " simulate " the way your baby nursed... I always did a medium, fast cycle initially, like my baby latched on and sucked for all she was worth till the milk flowed, then turned it down a bit, and back up at the end of that session. When I had baby #3, he had a heart defect, plus a high bilirubin (jaundice) that should have gotten him hospitalized, but I convinced the ped that I would be better off handling it at home. We also did daily weights so that I could see when he was gaining enough at the feedings. His heart defect meant that he had a higher calorie need since his blood wasn't getting pumped through his body effectively, and working twice as hard. So he got pumped milk in a Supplemental Nurser attached to my nipples while he breastfed. I pumped after every feeding... felt like a dairy cow... but it made a heck of a difference. He didn't gain anything until nearly the 4th week of his life. My pedi even told me I " was failing at breastfeeding " and handed me a free can of formula. I pitched the powdery crap inside and hung onto the label. It was the first time I had *read* the label, despite giving it to my first child! I know why formula fed babies gain weight: there are three different types of oil listed first! That's like eating three meals a day at Mc's. Sure, you're gonna gain weight and grow, but you'd be much healthier if you had well-rounded home-cooked meals! Anyways, I do know this about pumps... and if you've read this far, I apologize for being so wordy, but this is probably the part you'd be most interested in. If you use a pump regularly to build or maintain your supply, the key thing to look for is the frequency of cycles, meaning how often suction and release occurs in 60 seconds. Here's what I have: Full-Size Automatic Piston Pumps (Ameda-Egnell SMB or Lact-E, Medela Classic) * cycle between 48 and 60 times per minute. * weigh between 16 and 22 lbs, depending on pump * offer adjustable suction control for comfort Mid-Size Automatic Piston Pumps (Ameda-Egnell Elite, Medela Lactina) * cycle 30 to 60 times per minute * weigh between 5 and 7 pounds * offer adjustable suction control for comfort Automatic Diaphragm Pumps (Medela Pump-In-Style, White River 9050) * cycle 30 to 48 times per minute * weigh between 7 and 12 pounds * offer adjustable suction control for comfort Semi-Auto Diaphragm Pumps (Nurture III, Double Up, Natural Choice) * provides fingertip suction control, generating at most 25 cycles per min * weighs less than 2 pounds * no adjustable suction settings for comfort Small Motorized Single Pumps (MagMag, Gentle Expressions, Evenflo, Medela Mini-Electric) * cycles 4 to 7 times per minute (exc. Mini-Electric at 30 per min) * weigh from 7 to 17 ounces * no adjustable suction control for comfort (exc Mini-Elec) I wish this book had the Avent Isis reviewed for comparison, so if anyone using one can compare it to one of these others for me, I'd love to see where it fits in! I've also never had an opportunity to use an Ameda-Egnell... but if anyone is looking for a good pump, try to get one of the top three on this list! Think of the cost this way: if you were buying formula (not the bottles/nipples, or the expense of preparing them) you'd spend well over $900 per year... far more than the cost of a really good pump! ------------------------------------------------------------------------
