Just my opinion, but I think we need to keep the worst of the worst on there, and the ones who are hopeful in any way we'll give the benefit of the doubt until they do something really bad. Guest guest
, each of us with AIH is different and each of us requires different treatment. However, I'm concerned that you might not be getting appropriate advice. You may be -- I just don't know. Generally, people start with a high dose of Prednisone and soon add about 100 mg of Imuran, if they can tolerate Imuran. If they can not, they are usually offered a similar drug such as 6MP in place of the Imuran. Then, the Prednisone dosage is reduced as the liver numbers stabilize. With each reduction, blood tests are done to monitor the liver's response to the reduction. The first reductions are in large increments. As the dosage lowers, the reductions are very, very small and very, very slow. A very few people are able to go off Prednisone completely, but they are rare exceptions. My doctor, who is well-known in the field, says he has never had an AIH patient who was able to successfully go off Prednisone permanently. He says that, for me, I might be able to stay at 5 mg for the rest of my life, but I may need to take 10 mg forever. I was diagnosed three and a half years ago. Now, I'm alternating between 10 mg and 7.5 mg. If you are in a situation where you can get a second opinion, I'd recommend your doing so. I know that isn't always easy. I strongly suggest that you get a basic reference book on liver disease. A popular one is "Dr. Palmer's Guide to Hepatitis and Liver Disease - What You Need to Know." You can get it for about $15 from Amazon.com, if you can't find it at a local bookstore. Or, you can go to Dr. Palmer's website, liverdisease.com, where it sells for about $11. The website has some general information about liver disorders and treatments. I'm glad you've found this group. AIH is a confusing disease, and so is its treatment, until you get the hang of it. Keep in mind that most people who respond well to standard treatment have normal life spans. May I suggest that you keep a good record of your treatment and of any problems you may have with work. This may help if you have difficulties with insurance or if you need to apply for disability. In some states, you can apply for temporary disability payments if you find you can't work. I couldn't, and they were a lifesaver for me. Harper
