Guest guest
Dear Judy, Welcome to the club. I won't be able to answer some of your questions, but others here will and you'll be surprised at how many respond with helpful suggestions.....This is a Great Group and regardless of whether Dr. R does your surgery or you have someone else do it (or even another type) doesn't matter here....everybody who is " weight challenged " is truly welcome. Unless you have to do a lot of lifting with your K students, two weeks should be plenty of recovery time (personal opinion). I know that by the end of the 2nd week I felt like I hadn't even had surgery as far as strength, stamina etc. I think some of the others felt pretty tired by the end of the day for a while longer, but I wasn't working outside the home so my schedule probably wasn't as hectic. The rules on clinic visits for out of state patients are different. The web site has a special link to follow for those directions. I think most out-of-state patients fly in to be present for clinic the Saturday before their surgery early in the week. Then they stay in town until the next Sat clinic and if everything is OK fly home afterward. I think Dr. R does one or two LONG phone consultations with out of staters in lieu of the 3 meetings. Even for those close enough to drive, the 3rd visit is usually the day of surgery.....at least that's the way it was with me. Dr. R's web site is pretty thorough in detailing who is and is not a good candidate for his procedure but since there may be " complicating " factors in some cases it's always better to ask him directly. He usually answers e-mail in less than 48 hours although we have sung his praises over the internet so much and positive " word of mouth " is spreading in state that we're in danger of covering him up....but he will respond so don't give up. Some abdominal surgeries do preclude using this procedure. The mesh may be an issue depending on location. Have you viewed the video of surgery on his site? Being able to see how he does the procedure and knowing how/where your other was will probably give you an idea of whether this might be a problem. Previous surgeries I had included 1. Hysterectomy 2. Tubal Ligation 3. Gallbladder (open). He was concerned that there might be some scar tissue that would make the surgery take longer or require switching to " open " but once he started he didn't find any heavy scarring and was able to finish the procedure via Lap in about 90 minutes. I'm only semi-computer literate, but I think all you have to do is hit " Reply to Author " and if your subject line on the inbox list shows {MiniGastricBypass...} it will post to the list as just your message with the original message at the bottom of yours. If you have any more specific questions please feel free to write back. Hello from a Newbie > > >Hi! Guest guest
Judy, Welcome! As I haven't read all the replies to your post, I don't want to repeat a lot. Since your an out of towner (like me), you only have to attend one session Sat. in Durham...the other two session are via telephone to Dr. R. (at least this is the way I understand it. To know if you have sleep apnea you need to have a sleep study. If you snore, you have a high likelihood...along with high BP fatigue...I hear a short thick neck may be another indication and there are others but if you haven't you'll probably hear more about it... Your PCP can do an easy thing to test your oxygenation when you sleep to see if it may be advantagious to have the sleep study..... From the way others talk you probably could go back to work 10-14 days post op if all goes well. ANYWAY.....I want to know more about this Dr. in Milwaukee that will be coming...to what clinic or practice? who knows about it? Right now I want Dr. R. to do my surgery but I am not sure what may happen in the future and would love an alternative. I live in east central IL and have family in Rhinelander and at one time lived in Wausau so I could probably have a better chance of having more people available to me if I am in Milwaukee and it would be closer...but as I said earlier only if I have roadblocks to having Dr. R. do it.... any way.....Welcome!
