Guest guest
Kell, I have offered this challenged here and other places, but never had any takers. I understand variety being healthy and the spice of life, etc., but I wonder if there isn't one dish that you could eat at every meal that would be in balance for calories, nutrients and sugar-healthy. I understand this is probably a dietetic impossibility, but close would be interesting. Hey, our pets do it...
Guest guest
it would have to taste damn good. I have been told that there are some meal bars and meal cookies that might fit. I think however you would still need to eat fresh veggies and fruit. Kell MSN: Kell@... Guest guest
Kelleigh, and all, First, I've taken the liberty to change the subject line to reflect the specific topic. also asked if there was something we could eat, more or less the same or consistently, that would be nutritionally balanced. (Is that close ?) I'll take a stab at this, so here's my 2 cents worth. I try to minimize fast acting carbohydrates, which is not saying I eliminate them. I don't care for elaborate or rich meals either, which I believe is helpful for diabetics. I try to include some form of protein with meals, which usually do contain carbohydrates, and as much as possible, I try to include high fiber with meals. Some examples are: Breakfasts: *Old fashioned oat meal (whole oats), not instant oatmeal. A serving is 1/2 cup of dry oats, but I reduce this to 1/3 cup. Add blueberries, cinnamon, small amount of honey, walnuts, and milk. *English muffin with poached egg. *English muffin with crunchy peanut butter. Will usually also have walnuts on the side. Lunch: *5 or 6 Triscuit crackers (this is a whole wheat product, with 0 flour). Large serving of walnuts. Water for beverage, half a banana, and 1 cookie for dessert. (My wife makes me oatmeal cookies made with old fashioned oat meal). *Half a bagel (or perhaps could substitute 1 slice of whole wheat or pita bread or wrap made with whole wheat flour) with turkey or chicken or tuna fish. Water as beverage, half a banana or perhaps apple or blueberries. 1 oatmeal cookie for dessert. *Chicken or vegetable soup, preferably home made with very little sodium (sodium is not good for any diabetic with kidney problems). Triscuit crackers, or perhaps soup may have noodles, in which case can eliminate crackers or bread. Water for beverage, and oatmeal cookie for dessert. Dinner: Note: Use the imagery of a plate divided into 3 portions: half of the plate is vegetables, one quarter is meat, and 1 quarter is starch. Meats should be lean. Can include chicken, turkey, fish. Not all fish is of equal value. Salmon and tuna are high in Omega 3, while other fish is actually not good. (Perhaps someone can research this, but may include most shell fish like shrimp and clams.) Starches could be foods like, brown rice, sweet potatoes, or even whole wheat pasta products. Again, keep in mind the small portion size portrayed by the 1 quarter of the plate imagery. Some vegetables are higher in starchy carbohydrates such as, corn, peas, lima beans. A high fiber starch that provides protein as well as fiber is lentils. Again, maybe someone can provide information on the " good " beans! Don't forget about the incredible edible egg! If your cholesterol runs high, you might want to watch the total number of eggs you eat per week, and you could even use egg substitutes perhaps. Enjoy them poached, boiled, or even as an omelet. Eggs can be great for dinner, and sometimes we will even have pancakes (yes, good old fashioned pancakes) with eggs as the protein. Maybe even Canadian bacon. When I have pancakes(never more than 2), My wife puts a nice handful of blueberries in them! Snacks: *Nuts are good, but not all nuts. Try eating walnuts, almonds, or regular peanuts between meals. You could also have a couple of regular crackers with peanut butter, but testing your bg before your next meal will tell you if the snack you ate between meals is the right one. Foods that could be considered unhealthy, as well as hard to manage from a diabetic perspective are, sauces and gravies rich with fat and milk, desserts loaded with sugar and butter, and made with white flour, any store bought or pre-packaged cookies and cakes, and of course, regular sodas and drinks. You should also avoid potato chips and other snack foods which are high in saturated fat and sodium, and rarely contain anything of any nutritional value. I hope this helps a little! I do believe limiting the range of foods in your meal plans will ultimately help you control your blood sugars. This will also help you to be healthier, provided the foods you choose to eat are nutritional, containing vitamins, minerals, and good fat! Guest guest
Thank You, and I agree, I have better control too when I eat within the same limits each day. My goal is to find a range of foods that fit the same limits and balance. I have also found that not eatting fast food helps , I stopped eatting fast food almost 2 years ago, when I started thinking, that a fat lady has no call to be stuffing her mouth with that shit. I have noticed an improvement all the way around, I also stopped all soad at the same time, even diet. I love iced coffe, and I found one here at the store that is only 13 carbs, so once a week I have that as a treat. I use to get the full on iced cap from timmy's, and oh my god, lets say sugar overload! Do you know one of them has almost enough calories for an entire day for an average girl. WOW. Guest guest
From your file of carbbs per food or drink items, create a menu of food and drink items that equals no more than 15 grams of carbs, then using the very same file create a menu that contains no more than 30 grams of carbs If you can do this, then you are pretty much on the way to knowing how to count carbs and creating a meal and snack menu for yourself. If you still need a file of common grams of carbs, then it is available upon your request. Harry an idea. I am wanting to create a menu system, that is simple and easy to follow for blind people. Guest guest
Dave, Your recommendations are great. I have an alternative formulation for a diet. one quarter cup of nuts like peanuts, pecans or walnuts or even mixed. Preferably use unsalted nuts. This little cup of nuts contains around 6 grams of carbs, drink three Micalobe Ultra beers at 2.65 grams of carbs per beer for a total of less than 9 grams of carbs or drink 18 ounces of red wine for a total of nine grams of carbs. If you don't like this combination for breakfast, then it would make a good snack. It could even be used for supper or lunch. How do you like this formulation for a good and tasty 15 grams of carbs? If you know how to count grams of carbs, then countless formulations are available. an idea. I am wanting to create a menu system, that is simple and easy to follow for blind people. Guest guest
Thanks, Harry, but I think I'll stick to oatmeal, or an egg-a-muffin, and my coffee!
