Guest guest
Buckets seats and those with high sides mean some seats perch pricariously (prob. spelt wrong) on the seats. If you have a front passenger airbag and therefore can't put the seat in the front this can exaggerate the short seat belt problem. You can get longer seat belts from some manufacturers but you must get these fitted by a pro!! Guest guest
>>Does anyone ( eg shirley) know if it's true that car seats should be binned after 5 years - ours has never been in a crash, and they still sell the same model but might it have plastic fatigue or is it a ploy to sell more?<< -- Would be interested to know where you heard this . I have not heard this - my opinion is that as long as a car seat / infant carrier has been well looked after, shows no signs of wear, has never been involved in an accident (even slight bumps) and fits well into the car you currently use then it will provide the impact protection it should. I have six seats (3 in each car) and I updated our original seat choices because of improvements in design rather than age of seats - we still use the older three in dh's car as he doesn't carry the kids that often. If you are unsure you could check with the Britax helpline who are usually well informed and helpful or RoSPA who would give you the independant view. Both have websites - sorry my big PC failure of the last few weeks has left me without many of my contact details and I am trying to get time to sort it out! - If you require other information i should be able to make a few calls next week to check for sure.... In the absence of any evidence to support this theory I would recommend use of your seats with the stipulations already mentioned. Guest guest
> " Was just thinking....what are the regulations on infant car seats in Ldn > now, and can you get the fitting of them in your car tested at the local > police > stn as you can in the states..? " A summary of the law is found on the Britax website www.britax.co.uk ??. Basically, if you have child restraints they have to be used otherwise an adult restraint should be used is the legal side of it IIRC. Quite lax.. You may be able to get the fitting checked by someone at your local council (road safety officer) otherwise some places Car Seat Safety Centre ? Milton Keynes will help you. I wish I'd known about the police check thing in the US. Some prat a the hire co when I went to VA showed me how to fit Steffi's seat and used the wrong seat belt routing. It was the follwing day and a 2.5 hour min journey later before I realised. And there were no instructions with the seat except what was printed on it. And they wouldn't fit it because of poss of litigation. I now know better and will only hire cars through companies which promise to have them fitted on your arrival. Sorry that was all off the top of my head - hope it's of some use. Shirley's the real expert. -- Sue

Guest guest
Thanks Sue! I have noticed that the enforcement of the law is also quite lax and have a horrible sick feeling every time I see someone in a car holding their baby on their lap. One time, I saw a woman get in a car with her baby in a bouncy crasdle and just set the thing on the seat next to her. The seat belt laws and enforcement in the US are pretty lax as well in places, and it has always bothered me, having been brought up with " this car does not start until EVERYONE has a seat belt on, " but now that I have my own baby, it drives me absolutely crazy!
