When I registered Steffi, I was told that she would always have to

carry a copy of Grae's birth certificate and his deed poll round with

her - yeah right!

He changed his (first) name in his late teens but fortunately NZ birth

certs have a space on the bottom for 'Subsequent name changes' so it

is included. Very handy I think. Not going to make it any more

likely that my daughter will need it though.

OTOH, when I took Steffi to the US she travelled on a NZ passport. It

is no longer required for foreign nationals leaving the country to get

an exit stamp. When I brought her back in, I was questioned quite

closely on why she had no previous stamps (cos she's never left the

country before - doh! and when she did you didn't stamp her) and why

she was travelling on an NZ passport (because they guarantee issuing

it in under a week instead of a month). Luckily I had all our birth

certs, marriage cert, etc with me so the delay was minimal.

.....so now I'm sitting here thinking 'was he one of those kids

with hippy parents who was saddled with a name like Moon Unit or

Dweezil?'

;-)

Seriously tho', I have a friend who changed her name while at

uni. I met her a couple of years ago, just as she'd decided to

un-change her name. Very weird situation, getting to know

someone with one name and then having to start calling her

another after a few months...

(who has trouble remembering I'm meant to be a now,

not a Lucas and therefore would be a v bad candidate for a name

change!)

I knew of somebody (the friend of the brother of a friend) who changed his

name by deed poll to Rowntrees Fruit Pastille. This was in the days before

Rowntrees was owned by N****e, I wonder if he had to change it again, I

think they were the kind of students who would have supported the boycott.

I also wonder if he thinks it was a clever move now, he must be in his 40s.

Nothing so interesting I'm afraid altho' it being NZ that wouldn't be

so strange. One of Grae's friends' brothers has changed his name *to*

something like that.

There is a story.

His mum had a former boyfriend called Grae. She loved the name but

since she married Charlie who went on to be the father of her

children, she didn't think it appropriate to call her second son after

an ex! So she settled for Graeme but always called him Grae.

At 18 he changed it.

Funny this is that because of this everyone knows the story whereas

they wouldn't have if she'd just called him Grae in the first place!

I knew someone who changed their name to Fruitbat - no surname, just

Fruitbat Esq. He probably thought he was unique but amazingly I have come

across two other individuals with that name!!!!

I had assumed Grae was short for Graeme all the time. I've not heard of Grae

as a name in it's own right. Oh well.

Same here, Helen, although I know of Grae when spelt Grey or Gray.
