Hi y’all:

I hope one of you OB-GYN whizzes will educate me. I can’t even give a

sounds like for the blank below, but I’m hoping that you can give me an idea

of WHAT might be 863. By the way, out of the entire dictation, this

absolutely horrid ESL says “eight hundred and sixty-three” the most clearly,

but I certainly don’t know what he said right before it!

This is a followup dictation on this 22-year-old female who underwent

ultrasound of the abdomen that shows a 10 weeks' intrauterine pregnancy with

a ________ of 863.

Hi there Jayni! I am by no means an OB/GYN whiz, but I'll throw out a

suggestion for you. ) Could he be saying " AFI " or " amniotic fluid index "

by any chance? At 10 weeks' gestation, there should be a higher value of

amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus than say at 30 weeks' gestation. In

Fischbach's Common Lab and Diagnostic Tests book, I found that the volume of

amniotic fluid can be 30-1500 mL depending on stage of gestation.

Maybe this will help. )

Okay, I am probably wrong, but I just have to ask. Could 863 be EDC? (I can

hear that if I say 863 really, really fast!)

I can't get that to work because he clearly says " eight HUNDRED and

sixty-three " and because if it was EDC, wouldn't it have a date after it?

EDC = estimated date of confinement (can also mean estimated date of

conception)

I had to admit defeat and send this report with a blank. Even with some

things to look for, I just couldn't make out what he was saying - he's

AWFUL. In a hospital full of horrid dictators, he's definitely in the top

3, and he may be their KING.
