A trick that worked for us was

for capsules, I'd put them on my son's tongue and hold a cup with a straw in it even with his chest. He had to bend his neck so he was facing straight down to the ground. Once he sipped the water, the capsule floated to the back of his throat. With 2 sips from the straw, the capsule was gone. With tablets, I'd have him take a sip then tip his head back. After he realized what he was doing, and how it felt, he didn't have to lean forward or tip back any more.

We tried special cups, straws and putting pills in stuff. Nothing worked for us. I think after the first day of doing it this way my son realized it meant that he didn't have to drink anymore spiked juice. LOL

Now he can swallow several capsules at a time

P.S. Can you share your  story of how your son recovered?

Hi Robin,

My son is recovered and twenty one.  The day he learned how to swallow pills was a life changing event.  I know you are dreading this, but it was really quite easy to teach.  This is how I got my son to take meds.  I would mix the crushed medicine in Mocha Mix non-dairy ice cream or sorbet and put it on a teaspoon.  (The Mocha Mix Ice Cream is in with the other ice creams.)  Then I would give it to my son and follow it with a water chaser.  Frozen foods tend to make your taste buds not as sensitive.

When he was between 4 and 5 this is how I taught him to take pills.  I would cut the pills into small pieces and surround them in the ice cream and put them on a spoon.  Once again follow it with a water chaser.  Eventually when he was ready, we eliminated the ice cream.  Hope this helps!
