Guest guest
I know this list serv discussed concurrent therapy and the use of students just a few weeks ago under SNF Part A. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released updated information on MDS 3.0 on June 10, 2010 that effects therapy services. Information included in this update includes group therapy, individual therapy, concurrent therapy, use of aides, and use of students, just to name a few topics. To find the information, click on the link below or cut and paste in your browser. Once on the page, scroll down and click on MDS 3.0 RAI Manual V1.02 June 10, 2010 [ZIP 493 KB] Once there, open the zip file and find the Section O PDF File. http://www.cms.gov/NursingHomeQualityInits/45_NHQIMDS30TrainingMaterials.asp#Top\ OfPage Here is what CMS states about concurrent therapy and the use of students. Concurrent Therapy Medicare Part A The treatment of 2 residents, who are not performing the same or similar activities, at the same time, regardless of payer source, both of whom must be in line-of-sight of the treating therapist or assistant. When a therapy student is involved with the treatment, and one of the following occurs, the minutes may be coded as concurrent therapy: • The therapy student is treating one resident and the supervising therapist/assistant is treating another resident and the therapy student is in line-of-sight; or • The therapy student is treating 2 residents, both of whom are in line-of-sight of the therapy student and the supervising therapist/assistant; or • The therapy student is not treating any residents and the supervising therapist/assistant is treating 2 residents at the same time, regardless of payer source, both of whom are in line-of-sight.
