Guest guest
Hey: It's probably due to swelling in there & perhaps the brackets too. I learned how to make my cheek puff out right before biting. After a few days of that, the swelling inside went down enough to make it stay out of the way on it's own. Hope this helps. It won't be long & it will start healing on it's own despite the biting. Guest guest
hey irish, i know i'm not there yet, but perhaps wax can be stuck back there and help prevent you from biting off your cheek tonja
Guest guest
-Irish-- I don't think I am doing that, but still kinda numb. How are you biting your cheeks if you are wired... ? aren't your jaws immobile? I would definitely put a call in to the surg if it is bothering you like you say... I don't have any idea what would help you but I am sure your doc could offer you some help.. Irish, if any of them give you grief, you just tell them to line right up and kiss your um.. cheeks. -john
Guest guest
Is your splint still in? (I'm guessing that it is, but can't really remember whether you were one who escaped splinting.) Yesterday I asked my surgeon when I'd stop biting my cheeks (this was just after he doomed me to two more weeks in the splint). " Oh, you wanted to stop doing that? " he grinned. Yessir. I do. It's mincemeat back there, and I feel every piece of the lower brace. " When the splint comes out. " I meant to ask him about Orabase. It's about $9 for .004 oz., or something ridiculous like that. Made by the fine folks who gave us Oragel, and it forms a kind of skin over cuts etc in the mouth. Colgate makes a similar product. I think Fiddlesticks has had some luck with it, in her badly wounded mouth. But did I remember? Nope. So frustrated about the splint that I plumb forgot. Oh well, I may invest. If so, I'll report. But I think that as long as the wires of the splint keep catching the tissues, it's all gonna stay swollen, angry and sore. Guest guest
Thanks Cammie, Yes I have a splint for three more weeks. I do have Orabase, which does work well for me for ulcers in the mouth, but there's so much chewed up tissue in the back, I'm not sure it would work. I'll give it a try, though. Thanks, Irish! > > Hi All! > > > > I know with that subject line I'm asking for trouble from some of > the > > smarty-pants we now have on the board (you know who you are!) > but ... > > > > I'm almost 3 weeks post op and it seems that I've been biting the > > be-jeebers out of my cheeks way in the back with my molars. Irish, I would try packing your brackets with wax, quite a bit of it to build it up and help keep your cheek away from the braces. Also, if you are looking for something you can apply to the sores, try Zilactin-B. It comes in a small tube, you can buy it at just about any store (usually in the same section as orabase and things like that). It is better than orabase though because it forms a protective film around the sore (kind of like a liquid bandaid). It is brown and burns like crap when you apply it (use a Q-tip) but it lasts for several hours, and works great. Hope this helps I am two months post op and feeling great!!!
