Renae,

Welcome to the list. I am Wendi sahm to Kaija 7yo ( homeschools) & Zaid 17

months (nursing). We live in No. Calif. There aren't really any foods you have

to avoid unless they upset your baby. Cabbage and such can cause a gassy baby

but I never noticed that. Dairy also can cause colic, but not in all babes.

For now you could eat a little on the bland side, just in case but other than

that it is an individual baby's intolerance that causes food restrictions. Just

mainly eating healthy and low fat. Lots of water as we have been discussing. I

couldn't eat garlic with Kaija ( she would projectile vomit) but Zaid is

unbothered by anything that I eat. Congratulations on your newest arrival. Can

we have a run down on your kids names, ages, and nursing history if you have

some time. Just for curiosity sake. :) Again welcome and we will look forward

to hearing about your growing babe.

Wendi

Liz,

Welcome. I just introd to someone else so won't repeat, but we homeschool as

well. Glad to have you here. That is one reason I am nursing my son longer

than my dd. When my dd was a toddler I found so many times that I could have

comforted her if we were still nursing. I decided then to nurse longer the next

time. So far so good. 17 months and going strong.

Wendi

Introduction

Hi my name is Liz Hanson and I am a SAHM of two children. Tyler is 3 1/2

and Kira is 2 1/2. My husband is and he is a local truck driver.

He could make more money if he went on long hauls but we feel it is more

important that he be home every night. Tyler was breastfed for 9 weeks

and was switched to a bottle because of misinformation that I received.

Kira is still nursing and shows very little sign of weaning. I am very

active within my La Leche League group and I attend MOPS(Mothers Of

PreSchoolers). We are planning on homeschooling our children and we look

forward to teaching them at home. My daughter had eye surgery last year

to remove a cataract and I cannot tell you how great it is to comfort a

toddler who is scared and upset through breastfeeding.

Wendi,

My job entails several parts of supporting children and their families

through the hospitalization experience. I have worked on PICU and now on

Acute Care. I only have my bachelors. Most of my co workers have their

masters degrees though. I will go back and get mine, eventually. I do a lot

of teaching children (and parents many times) about surgeries and procedures,

helping (usually older) children do visualization, relaxation during these

procedures, also doing diversional exercises during these procedures. I

attempt to help parents understand what hospitalization can effect children's

development and ways to deal with those regressions/aggression. Another job

I have is to help the siblings, cousins, etc. feel a part of the experience

by educating them about the hospitalization . A big part of my role is also

to help empower the patients in regards to their hospital stay...offering

appropriate choices and advocating for them when their basic developmental

needs or certain considerations are not being met. We do some therapeutic

play...not play therapy which requires a liscense and higher level degree.

This play includes needle play, water play, medical play and the like. Well,

that's it in a nutshell. I enjoy it, but it can be quite draining. I like

that I am able to work only 2 days/week. Thanks for asking!

Do you mainly assist kids and their families to cope with the hospital

experience? How much schooling did you need for that? You said you work at

Loma University. I grew up in Riverside and at one point lived within

walking distance. :)

What an interesting job. I know how taxing it can be. It was too much for me

working in the NICU. Thanks for explaining.

Alli-

First of all I'd like to say HANG IN THERE! The pain got to be really bad

sometimes but I stuck it out...even with everyone in the family telling me I

should quit breastfeeding - except hubby.

There is a lot they (the doctors and nurses) don't tell you about thrush.

Here are a few examples:

1. Sterilize everything that comes into contact with babies

mouth or your breasts. Medicine droppers, Bottle Nipples, Breast Shields,

Pacifiers, even your bras should be boiled for 20 minutes once a day. It

gets to be a pain in the butt but you get used to it.

2. If you are giving your baby medicine from a dropper DO

NOT put medicine in his/her mouth and then back in the bottle. If you do you

are contaminating the entire bottle of medicine with yeast and must throw it

away and start over.

Like I said, it took me forever to get over mine because I didn't know a lot

of this information. I wish you the best of luck and hope you don't suffer

as long as I did.

Oh, by the way...washing your bras in really hot water with a little bleach

will work also - instead of boiling them.

I am glad to know you have won the thrush battle. Sounds like you had a

pretty severe case! You're expertise will be very helpful. I just did my

intro to welcome another new member, so I will not repeat myself.

I've been thinking the same thing since I've gone back

to work. I've almost unsubscribed about 3 times in

the past week or so but can't do it. I love this

list! (and the women on it!). I finally decided to go

to digest today - so you might not hear as much from

me, but I'll still be here.

When I was teacher training (3-9 range), we had two men on the

course, both intending to specialise in nursery - and they were

regarded with suspicion - not, as far as I could tell the abuse

thing, their commitment seemed to be questioned in a way that a

woman's wasn't. They were both very good, one particularly so (though

he's given up nursery teaching to be a Stay at home Dad)

Hi Helen.

Welcome!

Can`t compete on the 'no. of children' tally - but its our 15th Wedding

anniversary on 1 June :-)

Have just been to Nephew`s 18th birthday celebration, he was a wee boy of 3

at our wedding with his hand constantly down his shorts. Didn`t remind him

though.

Hi All

This is a quick introduction about myself to the list. I am currently 27 weeks

pregnant and on my third pregnancy. My eldest, , was born in 1994 at the

RAF hospital in Germany. She was overdue by 9 days and after a long and

agonising 38 hour labour things ended with an emergency C Section for signs of

foetal distress. My second girl, Jodie, was born in 1996. By this time the RAF

hospital had closed and she was to be born in a German hospital. After hearing

horror stories about the German hospital I elected to have another section. I

moved back to the UK about 3 years ago. When I got pregnant this time I was

really surprised to be told that I could try for a vaginal delivery, I am going

to discuss this with the consultant on Thursday. Well thats a little bit about

my situation and if theres anyone else who has been through this I would love to

hear from you
