Oh, I could repeat the push for total communication forever. had

hearing aids by age 3 months; in her better ear, hearing was corrected to

within the normal range for years. We have a huge house, but when she

was small I could simply call her to dinner from the foot of our stairs.

The local speech folks were just that: not speech pathologists but speech

folks. As I've said before here, without realizing what was happening, we

were caught in the oral only/total communication fiasco.

Long story made short: has now lost all of her hearing. Happily for

and all of us, much sign was already in place before this dreadful

occurrence.

I echo the comment about Perkins - but if they don't urge total

communication (voice, sign, mime, pictures - anything that might work), I'd

ask why the devil not! Martha

(I only wish to goodness that our school district had listened to 's first

eval from Perkins when she was small: total communication; they didn't,

and Andy and I were too green to know the importance of their words). A

human being MUST have a consistent mode of communication!

Michele: i don't remember where you live. If you have a local university,

check there for sign language courses - especially if they have a

communications disorder section. My husband is a professor, so we

didn't have to pay, but I don't think there's ever a charge here for parents ---

and our then 10 year old attended, too. It didn't take much time at all ---

just now have the problem of not using the language because isn't

always here, etc. Martha

That is disconcerting to say the least. Was the hearing loss as mysterious

as most things with these guys or do you know why it went away?
