Guest guest
Marcia, I have done some investigating regarding the MCIC of this functional outcome measure, and to date have found nothing. I do think it is a useful tool on an individual basis to perhaps compare separate items and develop functional goals. Moreover, I have not seen any validation studies. PT, NY Subject: OPTIMAL To: PTManager Date: Wednesday, June 23, 2010, 4:54 PM  Hi all- This queery is directed to those of you who are using the OPTIMAL ( Outpatient Physical Therapy Improvement in Mobility Assessment Log) as an outcome measure in your clinic. Does anyone have a reference for standardized norms for gains/improvement or MCID? We have been using it on an individual basis to compare baseline to final status but have been unable to find any more group outcomes data. Any suggestions are most welcome. Guest guest
Marcy, I've used OPTIMAL since 2006 - there is only one published article and it doesn't contain MCID or MDC: http://ptjournal.apta.org/cgi/content/full/85/6/515 To answer your question, I called the lead author and asked the obvious: " Does the MCID = 1.0 for the OPTIMAL? " He acknowledged that this was possible. Since MCID is a consensus-based measure this seems to be an good assumption. The article didn't contain any data, like SEM or ICCs, that would allow me to calculate Minimum Detectable Change (MDC). The OPTIMAL gets beaten like a stepchild for its psychometrics but, for me, it was a good 'gateway' self-report measure. We now use condition-specific measures (like DASH and LEFS) as well as psychosocial measures (like FABQ). I use OPTIMAL now just for multi-region patients (like MVA). Also, we translated OPTIMAL into Spanish (the OPTIMO) and I use this non-validated format for those patients. Congratulations on your efforts to collect outcomes in physical therapy.
