Yes, I was excited and scared, and sore after, and I lost the positive attitude of " this too shall pass " ...wicked Pam taught me to have a positive attitude all the way through and you will get back on your feet faster. After I took her advice, things got easier and easier. Guest guest Posted September 25, 2000 Report Share Posted September 25, 2000 Good luck! My mother had her surgery with Dr. Thayer on Valentine's Day, 2000 and said he was wonderful. I guess he comes in your room a lot to check up on you. I'm having the operation the first week in November with him and for some reason, I feel totally comfortable with him. The only thing I can suggest is to make sure you have your Flintstone's already at home. And plenty of things to read. I'm actually going to the pre-op group meeting tomorrow morning. I'm not sure about the stage 3 diet (I had a dif't surgeon), but what does it include? The excess water weight will come off in no time, along with many more! Dawn surgery Well I am back from my surgery (Dr Thayer, 9-28-00) I came home yesterday. All went well I am just a little tired and sore. I am now enjoying that wonderful stager 3 diet. YUM YUM. Any suggestions ? Gained 20 pounds of fluid in the hospital (sure makes this seem worth it) Ah but that too shall pass, probably in the middle of the night when I am trying to sleep. My parents will definitely be there so that will be ok. Is ensure the best shake type thing to eat? Can you eat all kind of soups. Was talking really hard with the exander? I'd recommend you look at Myoplex shakes by EAS, or something similar. Find a local bodybuilding store, and ask them to show you what they have for meal replacements. And NEVER mention " GNC " in front of a bodybuilding crowd - they'll ridicule you endlessly. Best to find some small hardcore supply store; they're usually called " Samson's Supplements " , or " Popeye's " etc. You'll know you're in the right place when the guy helping you is wider than the door you just walked through. Guest guest Posted August 1, 2002 Report Share Posted August 1, 2002 Pete, Don't worry about too many questions--I have a bunch myself about the " big surgery " I'm having in November and at 46 years old I am frightened and very nervous about the recovery & the results. I drank the Ensure because I liked the taste & it got calories into me. The gatorade really quenched my thirst. I moved to soup with noodles and chicken in it after 5 or 6 days. I was able to eat very smooth mashed potatoes ( from Pudgies) pretty early in the recovery. The swelling was noticeable as was the bruising on my cheecks, around my mouth and my neck. This was all gone at the end of two weeks. Actually it was almost all gone at the beginning of the 2nd week. At first my speech was very slurred, but after a week it began to improve and continued too improve as my tongue got used to working around the expander. The first few days after the surgery I was convinced that I would not be able to speak clearly until the expander was removed--this was not at all the case. You must be carefull of what you eat- your ortho or surgeon will tell you about that, but you will not be terribly restricted and will be back to your normal routine quickly. How much time can you take from work or school? I don't blame you for being nervous-I was and I still am. Just know that if I at twice your age can get thru this, so can you. Please ask any question, any time. Pete's body will be in recovery, and will be utilizing protein and other nutrients at a higher rate.
