Guest guest
Callie, How wonderful of you to join us! I know you will be a lot of help here. We have such a super group here! I feel lucky to just know these ladies! I am and I am married to . We are both 30 and live in So. Cal. with our two boys Jake and Clay. Jake is 5 y/o and Clay is 17 m/o. Clay nurses anywhere from 2-5 times per day. I had many problems nursing Jake, I called him my " bottle lover. " He had medical/feeding issues galore which made things tough. The second time around has been easier, but still challenging...milk supply problems BIG time! I know that only %3 of the population really have supply problems, but something was up for sure! Well, that is us. Welcome and thanks for joining us!

Your story rminds me so much of myself with Tim my oldest son. I was not a Lactation Consultant at the time, and fell into ALL the traps... people telling me I had no milk, baby needed formula, etc.... I was so sad after I weaned him to formula that I vowed then and there that I would learn as much as I could about breastfeeding and get it right the second time around. And I did and look where it has lead me! I must say this sounds like such a nice supportive list. I have been involved in groups lists before where the postings could get pretty catty and judgemental and defensive and I have not seen that with this group. My kudos to all for that, after all isn't that what breastfeeding support is? Encouragment, support, compassion and understanding? Stepping down off my soap box..... for now! Guest guest
Callie, Yes, we have some wonderfully supportive people here. I think there is a lot of room here for different ideas and ways of life. I am so proud to be part of this list! With my first son I, actually, had lots of support to bfd. The hospital wasn't great, but I went ahead with my pumping ritual at any rate. Unfortunately, we were in a catch 22 with him. When he was ready to eat, they started him out bfdg on me. He seemed to do okay, but when they weighed him after bfdg, he did not gain ANY weight...not even partial ounces. In order for him to get to leave with us, he had to prove he could tolerate eating 40cc's. Even though I had pumped for a whole week-REGULARLY-I still did not have much bm for him and we ran out quickly. That began it all I feel. They began feeding him 10cc's at first and increased it little by little. I could not keep up,even with those small amounts. I saw a lactation consultant who taught us to finger feed him and I kept pumping. I did this through another surgery until he had an episode of respiratory arrest. Then...more tests....a final diagnosis of sever GE Reflux. This was when he was 3 mo. From 3-6 mo, I kept pumping, only getting small quantities. It was so frustrating! I did not try the herbs, but did try reglan to increase my supply. It helped only so mildly. Well, I gave it my best for 6 months. I was quite determined with my second baby. Again, the supply issues hindered us. We kept on going though, with help from a L.C. and LLL (not to mention my dh and family members who are VERY supportive). What are some reasons for low milk supply? How can one deal with this before it becomes a problem? Perhaps you have some further suggestions? Guest guest
, Was your son premature? Working in the nicu I found that the docs and nurses had really unrealistic expectations of new moms and their ability to produce milk to a pump. At the hospital I worked at we used bank milk a lot but the nurses would switch to formula unless the parents were really adamant about breastmilk. I found that the moms who were extemely militant about breastfeeding got more support than people who were on the fence. Doesn't seem right. It is so hard for mothers whose babies have to stay in the hospital for whatever reason. Wendi Re: Genetian Violet From: Mparker90@... Callie, Yes, we have some wonderfully supportive people here.
