I was overly curious and precocious...I looked it up for myself when I was 5

because nobody would tell me how my aunt got pregnant! Unfortunately the book I

had (a children's encyclopedia) pretty much explained everything except HOW the

sperm got to the egg. Somehow I figured it all out eventually, although nada's

" big talk " night when I was 7 did little to educate me beyond the concept of the

boy animal on top of the girl animal and that confounded me because my dad was

bigger than nada and wouldn't that be uncomfortable and squish her? Nada also

said something about " when a man and a woman are close together and loving each

other " . That practically traumatized me because MY book had explained how

microscopic sperm were...so here I was imagining these clouds of invisible sperm

floating through the air (and wondering how the HECK did they know where to go?

and they must sometimes get to the wrong person and that must be what they meant

when they said

" unwanted pregnancy " ). I was TERRIFIED to hug my dad because I knew I loved

him and he loved me...so I was CERTAIN that meant clouds of sperm might be

floating around when he hugged me. At some point I figured it all out, but I

don't have any recollection of those moments of discovery.

And while some of that is all cute and can be a really funny party story, what

strikes me NOW as I write it all out is that even then...as a small child...I

didn't turn to my parents with the questions I had, I knew better and I knew

that I had to rely on myself to get the answers I needed.
