For the expert in mechanical lumbar traction.

Is there any contraindication for mechanical traction when a patient may/may not

have inguinal hernia? How much intraabdominal pressure does the cinching of the

harness and subsequent pull produce?

Thanks,

Tom Plamondon PA-C, PT

Tom,

Most texts do not specifically list hernia as an absolute contraindication but

do state that it is contraindicated for any condition for which the fitting of a

harness is potentially problematic for the patient. The most recent text I own

(Michlovitz) does specifically list " hiatal or abdominal hernia " as a

contraindication.

Hope that helps,

Mike Lebec
