Guest guest
Hi Allie, Your comments about Windows ME are interesting. I've had ME for awhile with fewer problems than 98SE but I don't leave my computer on all the time. Sounds like it might be time to consider an upgrade to XP since I'm not sure you can even get 2000 anymore. Hmmm..... Sylvia Roller MT Wannabe...gonnabe! gentlsong@... I am pretty sure that 98 is not meant to be left on all the time. -Allie

Guest guest
I would wholeheartedly recommend XP. I've had it since January, and have gone from rebooting several times a day to rebooting once a week in a *bad* week. I keep many programs open ALL the time - including 3-4 instances of my browser, at least one major word processing program (and sometimes both Word and WordPerfect), Excel, all the Stedman's CDs, Instant Text, Little Red Notebook, etc., etc. - was with no problems. I never thought I would find myself recommending one of Mr. Gate$'s products (and I can still find fault - just don't get me on my soapbox), but I must admit that, by comparison to all the Windows versions I've used before it (and I have not used either NT or 2000), XP is a real winner. Guest guest
Thanks Jayni! Do you have XP Home or Professional? And is the notice about your emails being scanned by Norton something you put in there as a tag line or is it done automatically somehow. I've wondered this for awhile now and always forget to ask. Guest guest
Hi Sylvia: I have XP Home. As far as my notice about the e-mail being scanned: That’s a little guilt trip I added myself, but it was inspired by something similar that was in our list mom Trisha’s signature line. I can’t remember exactly how Trisha’s went, but I suspect it was gentler and more refined than mine. Trisha is a sweetie – not brash and outspoken like moi. Guest guest
You can get it. I just bought a copy of Windows 2000 and a new computer with Windows XP. If my plan to dual boot doesn't work, I'm going to wipe the hard drive in my old computer and install Windows 2000 in it for my husband to use. He will not put up with the temperamentalality of Windows 98 in that computer, and he will leave it on 24/7--never know when one will get an urge to play solitaire, and quickly. Windows 2000 combines the best features of Windows NT and Windows 98. Valeria At 02:55 PM 7/30/2002 -0400, Gentlsong wrote: >Hi Allie, > >Your comments about Windows ME are interesting. Guest guest
Actually XP is also built around the NT kernal (as is 2000) and should be as stable or more so than 2000. Guest guest
Nearly everyone I've talked to who's tried to run old software on Win XP has had a serious problem with it. My son spent the better part of a weekend on the phone with Dell getting his XP to run his management software. The school switched out computers with Win 2000 for new computers with Win XP in the middle of the semester, and the accounting instructor nearly had apoplexy because her Peachtree software would no longer work. I have to run old software, and I don't have time to have problems with it. So far it works great with the up-to-date software I've used, but I haven't tried installing any of the other yet. Guest guest
Hmmm....just noticed this in this reply. Does anyone know why my original message put an lt in front of every To address or why it says From gentlsong AND lt.gentlsong....?? Does this look like a possible virus to anyone else?? I've been using Incredimail and always have Norton scan every email coming and going. I'm also up to date with virus files. However, last night or the night before I got a message from a friend that was a reply to a message I'd never sent her and it also had gentlsong and lt.gentlsong in the From line of the original messages. If it's a virus, does it mean it's probably on my machine or does it mean that somebody who has me in their address book has it on their machine? And....would they have to have both my address AND my friend's address in their address book for this to happen like it did? Sylvia...who is wondering what in the world is going on here! Guest guest
I don't know why it happened, but I do recognize the HTML for the " less than " symbol or left angle bracket. Instead of printing the character (<), the program printed the HTML command ( & lt;). " Gentlsong " is the " nickname " and is the actual e-mail address. You could have a virus, I won't say that you don't, although an up-to-date virus scan is the best defense currently available. However, I don't think that you have to worry too much about the occasional HTML code coming up rather than the symbols the code represents. Guest guest
I suspect it's more likely that someone who has you in their address book has a virus and if I had to guess which virus it would be Klez. I run a cross stitch website and we have an email address naturally. One of the stitchers got Klez and ever since then there has been a virus sent to the website's email address from just about everyone in her address book. Many of these same people are in my address book as well which is how I recognized them. I also noticed by checking carefully it's not the exact address but a character here or there has been changed. Robyn Re: Re: Computer problems > Hmmm....just noticed this in this reply.
