Hi,

My name is Becky and I had Type 1 diabetes for over 20 years. I have a

guide dog named Mulligan and had a kidney pancreas transplant in 1999. I am

no longer considered a diabetic by my doctors, but I still live a diabetic

life when choosing what I eat and I am also very interested in learning

about the latest technologies and improvements for diabetics. I look

forward to hearing from members in this group and have a lot I can share

about my own ups and downs of having diabetes.

Thanks,

Becky

Hi Becky,

Yes I did dialysis for 1 year and 1 month. I hope never to go back. My

brother did almost 5 years. Too long!

In my case, I had my pancreas/kidney transplant in 99 and in 2002 my kidney

failed because of toxicity from the medications I have to take. My best

friend and now fiancé gave one his kidney’s to me and it has been doing

perfectly. I think technology has become better than ever to be sure you

are receiving the right amounts of anti rejection meds. As long as I do my

lab work and the support team at my hospital do their work and tweak my meds

they say that my pancreas and kidneys will last for many years. I have a

friend who received a liver transplant and he is going on 15 years with no

rejection, so I have lots of hope.

I had to do dialysis twice a week before the first transplant for 1 hour and

45 minutes and three times a week for 2 hours the second time. I was going

to school, so the doctors did not make me do the whole cycle. Both times I

had to do it for about 1 year. Needless to say, those were 2 very long

years!

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to learning and sharing with members

in this group. Good luck with your kidney. Did you ever have to do

dialysis?

Hi Becky,

Welcome to the list! I am a type 1 diabetic for 35 years and have had my

kidney transplanted. My brother has had a kidney/pancreas transplant like

you. Congratulations on a diabetes free life! Anyways, you'll enjoy the

list, there are many knowledgeable and friendly people here!

Thanks,

Becky

My first transplant was done at UCSF (University of California San

Francisco) and the second transplant was done at CPMC (California Pacific

Medical Center) also in San Francisco. Because my first Kidney failed due

to being over medicated my nephrologist did not want me to have my second

surgery done at the same hospital. I really have liked the after care from

CPMC and recommend to anyone to go there.

Welcome Becky,

I am the long-termer here. I have had type 1 diabetes for over 64 years

(since 1944). My kidneys are still barely working, but I have other

problems from the diabetes. I had a heart attack last week and had by-pass

surgery in 1990. I use a pump and my A1C is usually under 6.

Unfortunaely, they will not consider me for any kind of transplant because

of the heart problems. Glad to hear you are doing so well with your

transplants. I know of few diabetics who have had these transplants and are

doing well.
