Guest guest
Hi, My name is Becky and I had Type 1 diabetes for over 20 years. I have a guide dog named Mulligan and had a kidney pancreas transplant in 1999. I am no longer considered a diabetic by my doctors, but I still live a diabetic life when choosing what I eat and I am also very interested in learning about the latest technologies and improvements for diabetics. I look forward to hearing from members in this group and have a lot I can share about my own ups and downs of having diabetes. Thanks, Becky No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Guest guest
Hi Jen, I watch my diet pretty well, so my doctors do not ask me to check my blood sugars. I do have to get my lab work once a month, so they always check my A1C at that point. Since my transplant my life has changed and I really take care of my new kidney and pancreas. I never looked into the pump, but I have friends who have one and their diabetes really seem to be under great control. I have to take meds, but not taking insulin and dealing with reactions has been really nice for me. I'm 27 and have also had type 1 diabetes for over 17 years. There are a few long-term type 1s on this list, most who have had it for much longer than I have! I use an insulin pump to manage my diabetes. That must be really amazing to be essentially cured of diabetes after so long! Do you still have to test your blood sugar at all just to check? Guest guest
I am curious, does a pancreas transplant last forever, or does the same autoimmune process that caused type 1 in the first place come back eventually and kill the beta cells? Guest guest
In my case, I had my pancreas/kidney transplant in 99 and in 2002 my kidney failed because of toxicity from the medications I have to take. My best friend and now fiancé gave one his kidney’s to me and it has been doing perfectly. I think technology has become better than ever to be sure you are receiving the right amounts of anti rejection meds. As long as I do my lab work and the support team at my hospital do their work and tweak my meds they say that my pancreas and kidneys will last for many years. I have a friend who received a liver transplant and he is going on 15 years with no rejection, so I have lots of hope.
