Guest guest
Hi , Our son Jack,(6 1/2) gained 1 pound per year for 2 years. This was while on the GFCF diet (he still is) and Jack was eating more and healthier than the rest of us. After his 1st injection of Secretin he gained 4 pounds in about 6 months. While Jack will always be on the little, thin side, he looks much better now. From the side I can sometimes see just a tiny bit of belly. Guest guest
My 7 1/2 yr old weighs 56 lbs. This is the same he weighed 6 months ago, and when they weighed him then I swore he had lost weight. I remember him weighing in at 58lbs before, but the doctor couldn't find it in his chart. He has gotten taller, but I'm concerned because he's skinny, and doesn't seem to have the muscle mass he use to. I suppose that could be appearances because he has grown, in his clothes from last year it appears as if his arms and legs added 2 inches each. I guess I want to know if anyone else has seen this, if they figured out what was causing it. His eating habits are sporadic at best. He eats a good variety, but sometimes only picks at his meals, and lately won't eat breakfast. Any ideas?? I feel like the italian grandma's in my old neighborhood. Eat, EEEEAAAAAT, you must to fatten you up!! LOL
Guest guest
Hi , Yes, I am concerned about weight gain/growth issues as well for my son. He is 6 years, 8 months old and only weighs 42 lbs. He is wearing the same size 4 jeans for the 3rd winter in-a-row this year. They were long on him 3 winters ago and he's actually grown into the length now. But the waist still fits him with no problems. Throughout his entire life he has never experienced any rapid or even " normal " gains in weight. But, over the past 4 years his weight gain has really seemed to slow down. He usually gains just 1 lb. per year (one year he stayed the same and gained NOTHING!) and grows 1-3 " in height per year. He is SO small and also doesn't have the muscles he should, ESPECIALLY upper body (shoulders/arms). I, too, would be interested in learning more about the " whys " of this. Best Regards, [ ] not gaining weight > My 7 1/2 yr old weighs 56 lbs. This is the same he weighed 6 months ago, > and when they weighed him then I swore he had lost weight. Many times if children are eating foods they don't tolerate, and/or using enzymes, they can eat and not gain weight. http://www.gfcfdiet.com/ http://www.celiac.com/index.html http://www.houstonni.com/ Dana
Guest guest
I would definitely suggest digestive enzymes for this. If he has a problem with gluten/casein you can try something like Peptizyde. If you think it is overall digestion, then you can try one of the many broad-spectrum enzyme products (like Zyme Prime or Digest Gold from health food stores, Vital Zyme Forte from Klaire, etc). My younger son essentially stopped gaining weight about 5 years old and eating was a ...nightmare...for him. Very picky too. Getting terribly thin, but also growing in height. After seeing marginal improvements the first two weeks on enzymes, in the third week, he became ravenous and would accept a wide range of foods. He gained about 5 pounds he deperately needed in the first 3 months. Now he maintains his weight well and eating isn't a major issue anymore. He had an assortment of gut problems and so the enzymes acted appropriately. Enzymes have a known pattern of weight regulation. So if you are underweight, you tend to gain, if you are over weight, you tend to loose, and if you are okay...you stay that way. Here is some research from 1932 showing that. Sansum's (1932) published results on weight from a number of cases at the Potter Metabolic Clinic show that weight regulation is a long-standing effect of taking enzymes. Of 197 individuals who were underweight, 91 percent improved by gaining weight with enzymes. Of 29 individuals who were overweight, 93 percent improved by losing weight. Of the 54 individuals who started at an appropriate normal weight, 100 percent (all of them) remained at a constant weight. This group has a lot of information on enzymes, if you are interested: . P.S. One of the main functions of secretin is to improve enzyme activity in the intestines, so it would be reasonable that digestion would improve. Enzymes are just do this more directly. Guest guest
Yep, we're using enzymes. Though he's still completely gluten free, and only occasionally getting a milk or corn product. That must be it, because when we went GF/CF is when he started growing, he was really tiny before that, and with in one year he went up 2 sizes. Should I stop the enzymes? They are the houston enzymes. I got them because sometimes he acts like he's had a diet infringement even when I know he hasn't. We tried a diet diary for a month and I still couldn't find the culprit, so I thought the enzymes would help with that. I'm also confused because he has grown, all the pants he wore last winter are too short on him, he's just sooooo skinny!! Thanks, " danaatty " wrote: > > > My 7 1/2 yr old weighs 56 lbs. Some kids still need to stay away from certain foods, even with enzymes. So that is probably your child's issue. > > Should I stop the enzymes? They are the houston enzymes. I think you should continue the enzymes while keeping him away from the foods you KNOW are a problem for him. See if that helps. If it doesn't, then he might have a problem with the enzymes, and you can stop them and/or try different enzymes. Guest guest
We have exactly the same problem here. My GS will be 9 in January and only weighs 50 lbs. He is 4'2 " inches tall. We are going in for check up in Dec. and I am going to request a Growth hormone check. We give 2,000 mg. of Carnitine daily along with enzymes and all of the mito stuff and it makes no difference. He eats like two grown men and I mean he has something in his mouth all day long. For instance, he can eat 9 fish sticks and an entire can of green beans and corn and still the mega eater does not gain weight. His tests always come back malabsorbsion as well. I plan on seeing an endocrinologist and a doc for Malabsorbsion as soon as possible. Chris Re: not gaining weight This wouldn't be his reason then, bc he is happy and seems healthy. I hope the rest of you get well soon. It is good info. to know as any of us could get that. > > > > > > Anywone know of why a child might not gain weight? supplements or > > > minerals that might be toxic or not enough?
