Guest guest
-- My experience with cardiac arrest was very similar to Steve's. It happened on March 5, 1991 at 6:30 in the evening (funny how you never forget the time). My 17 year old daughter was with me and began CPR until paramedics arrived. She saved my life. That next week was a " blurr " to me, however, I was told that everytime I roused that I complained of how sore my chest was. I received an ICD implant the next week. I did not feel good for several months either, but you just need to hang in there--better times WILL come. Guest guest
-- I did not have burn marks on my chest, just bruising and soreness. My ICD has zapped me 3 times. All 3 times I had this " strange " feeling (only way I can describe it) and then the shock occurred almost instantaneously. Two times I became unconscious & did not feel the shock. The other time I felt the " jolt " quite well. All three times I was doing nothing more than sitting in a chair reading or talking to someone when it occurred. I've been on amiodarone (antiarrhythmic) now for 6 months, and have had no more trouble with ventricular tach/fibrillation (keeping my fingers crossed). Guest guest
, Won't the doctors give you Versed or some other med before defibbing you? Although I have been awake when I have been zapped by my defib, I have always been sent to a twilight sleep when zapped with paddles. When my defib discharges and I am conscious it definitely hurts momentarily and I do jump, but then the sensation quickly dissipates and I am so glad to be in a normal rhythm I don't mind (but that is always afterwards:-) Tell your drs. you want some Versed before they zap you or something to put you out briefly. Remember it is YOUR body that is being zapped, not the dr's, it is not for them to say what the experience is like for you. Be assertive and TELL them what you want. Somehow I cannot imagine they would defib you without first putting you in a twilight sleep, I know my drs. wouldn't. Good luck and let us know how it goes, in SC ------------------------------------------------------------------------ E-group home: http://www.eGroups.com/list/
Guest guest
Hi everyone, Thank you all so much, I always feel so alone and this group, although I have never responded, makes me feel like I belong to a big family. I have just spent 10 days in the hospital trying to control my v-tach. Had ablation done which was unsuccessful. I have now started corderone, but still not okay yet, having daily v-tachs, yet more mild. Anyway, in the hospital my ICD misread an abnormal sinus rhythm and started to shock me. I had five shocks in about 7 minutes. The first two were smaller (.4 jewel), and progressivly got stronger. The last two were 33 (which the doctor explained was 100X stronger than the normal .4) Luckily my rhythm returned to normal on its own or else I would have continued being shocked. The large shocks did not make me " jump " , but they were extremely painful, and I would literally scream when I got shocked and grab my chest where the ICD is located. After the episodes, I could barely lift my left arm because of the pain at my upper arm. I have had my doctor remove those high powered jolts unless my rhythem is over two hundred (luckily my attacks are usually 130-150). Again, Happy New Year to everyone. Being a younger (32) woman who has just been dealing with this a short time (6 months), everyones comments help so much, and I feel so much having a group like this one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Shortly after starting cordorone ( because of zaps) I had slow non sustained VT had to call ambulance to bring the paddles I was so uncomfortable. I was seen by an EP who reset the ICD and most of my problems have disappeared. At least no non sustained VT. During the implant the ICD was set for all or nothing so when the slow VT occurred it didn't activate pacing or zap. After the cordorone your pulse lengths change and the ICD may have to be reset. This procedure was approximately two hours, under slight anesthesia. I'm now set between 34 and 160, pulse length I don't know. Good Luck Mel
Guest guest
-- thanks for your message, I, too, have come to depend upon this group for support. Sometimes you feel like responding and other times it's just reassuring to read notes from other people with problems/concerns the same as ours. I'm GLAD Jon got his new computer, and I urge everyone to take time to re-submit information for his ZapLife Project. I'm looking forward to seeing that one day. Hang in, , and Happy 1999 to all. Guest guest
Hi : No, I have never had a cardiac arrest. It appears that 2 1/2 years ago I had a heart attack after having a baby. The scar tissue is making me have v- tachs. Originally they were rare, but last June I had an ICD implanted. I did get cardioverted with paddles the first v-tach, but was drugged so I don't remember. Since the implant I continue to have v-tachs and shocks, so was hospitalized for 10 days (got out on Christmas Eve), and was started on medication. I am not responding well, and get minor or unsustained v-tachs whenever I move (i.e., stand-up, go to the bathroom, etc). This is not helpful when you have stairs in your home. I go to the doctor tomorrow, I sure hope we can make this stop. Boy, did I ever give you a littney of complaints, sorry. How are you doing? What is your caridac problem, and what are you doing for it? Hang in there (like the rest of us), and take care, ------------------------------------------------------------------------
