What's so great about bagels? They taste good, and most have no fat (before

the cream cheese is added, that is). But it's time for a reality check. An

average

bagel, not even the largest NY bagel, is equivalent to three to four slices

of bread, or 45-60 grams of carbohydrate. No wonder people think bagels

raise

their glucose!

But you can have your bagel and eat it too! Here's some common-sense tips to

enjoy this breakfast staple:

list of 3 items

.. Cut bagels in two and eat just half at a time.

.. Use light cream cheese spreads and spread lightly

.. Consider low-sugar jam or jelly instead of cream cheese if fat and

calories are a concern

list end

One other thing: Whenever I have a bagel, I only ever eat half. And I spread

chunky peanut butter on it, not cream cheese, or worse yet, jam or jelly.
