I think they all have mercury. I use some in my house, and I happened to call the company I buy them from yesterday to ask if I should take the burned-out ones to hazardous waste. They said I can put them in the trash. > This was an old > building... We have newer ones in our basement where he does his programming > and we don't see the same affect. my guess is that it is more from the lighting issues than from the mercury, but I don't know. best wishes, Moria
Guest guest
Sue maybe this had a way of flickering not noticed by you but to him was quite stimulating. Also some older ones do be with a humming noise that can be to dance with the flickering too. Just my thinking on this. I to also add that some lights to contain led such as in the teen shops the lights with electricity shooting through them and such they contain lead and can be to be dangerous to let children touch and play with them. I to not be to know this until one day I to be to get such touching one and the store clerk told me to make sure to wash my hands very good afterwards because it has lead that seeps out onto he glass? Well I to quickly not be to touch it anymore and to left the store to wash hands. Thinking this to be odd that this is known and sold to children mostly teens but I to imagine many with autism have one as a sensory play? Guest guest
Yes, they do contain mercury and should be disposed of at toxic waste collection sites. They " cycle " and can trigger seizures in some. Real problem if they break. Do NOT vacuum, it just scatters the mercury. Unfortunately, most schools and businesses use them and utility companies keep pushing compact fluorescents on residential customers. Guest guest
Anyone have more info on these lights? My ds has been very excited by lights his entire life. He has quite a collection, and just got an 'electro storm ball' for Chrismtas. That's the one with the electicity shooting through it when you touch it. He was quite fascinated it with it, but thankfully not obsessed. I have told him to wash his hands now after playing with it, but I wonder if we should just get rid of it.... --- In , " Sondra " <hfa2@c...> wrote: I to also add > that some lights to contain led such as in the teen shops the lights with > electricity shooting through them and such they contain lead and can be to > be dangerous to let children touch and play with them. Guest guest
I would be to not let him to touch it at all lead can be a much dangerous metal and can cause permanent mental retardations if the levels build high enough, many with autism tend to build up the metals and do not seem to push them through the body as typicals do. They to just get blocked in us. I to not want the risk of my children to be to get toxic from another metal. Especially when I to know its source. Guest guest
Flourescent lights were a first source of problems for our son as an infant. We thought he had a problem with this type of lighting, possibly a sensitivity. Later he was dx as blind. Interesting thread to read. m.l. > What is up w/ flourescent lights; I thought I read somewhere that they > contain mercury... Guest guest
I have read that autistics can sometimes see the flickering of light that flourescents have. Perhaps he was zoning on the flickering? Kinda like watching a lava lamp?
