Guest guest
Hi everyone, I need your help regarding plastic surgery for CHARGE ears. Andy is 22 and has had one surgery when he was about 8 years old. That surgery somewhat improved the looks of his ears. One ear needed to be " pinned " back and the other was a classic CHARGE ear without a lobe and was quite floppy. The first surgery was done mainly to help keep a hearing aid on the ear. We have seen three plastic surgeons this month who are willing to do the second surgery, but have all said they don't think Andy will be happy with the results as the improvement would be minimal. (Andy is looking forward to having 2 identical ears). As you know, plastic surgeons have their photo album showing the " before " and " after " results from surgery. These three docs have books which are full of beautiful cleft lip repairs, but no ear photos. One mentioned that the field of plastic surgery has not yet figured out how to make drastic improvements on the ear without replacing the entire ear..... So, I'd like to hear your stories. Should I keep on looking for the doc who CAN improve Andy's ears? Is there anyone out there who can? Please let me know your stories as Andy is quite unhappy with his ears. Thanks a lot! Guest guest
Sally - The doc we used for Aubrie's reconstruction is Dr Bruce Bauer at Chicago Children's Memorial. He's also with Chicago Shriners. I believe he does plenty of ears although his specialty is in a particular kind of birthmark. We are happy with Aubrie's ears so far, but it's a bit early to say how we will feel in the long run and if any further surgery will be required or desired. We are going to use some splinting in the next month while she's in her cast to see if we can improve upon the surgery even further.
