Guest guest
Amy~I bf my dd a, & there never seemed to be enough mik to satisfy her. I would feed her & then she would take 4-5 oz. of formula right after. This would go on every 2-3 hours, except at night she would go 4 hrs. I wanted to nip that in the bud with , bt I'm afraid to say that he is starting to be the same way. I'm feeding him every 2 hrs., even waking him to do it, but he still wants more. I drink PLENTY of water, only water & tea, but is it possible that he just has a huge appetite? Right now we are doing about 10 oz. of formula in a 24 hr. period, but I can see it coming. I CANNOT let him chew on me all day as I have another child to attend to. If anyone has any help for me please let me know...I am at my wits end..... & am thinking about giving it up. Guest guest
I have never taken any supplements to increase my milk. IMHO--supplimenting with formula would tell your body that it dosen't need to make that extra 2oz--or however much. There are times --ie..growth spurt--that is seems like there is just not enough milk. It feels like my boob is about to be sucked inside out--but I continue to let her nurse--even on what I think are two empty breasts. Within a day or so my milk increases--just the same effect as if you have ever pumped milk. The first day you may have a hard time getting 1oz then the next day it is easier --then the next it's all there. I am speaking from my experience only--(bf Ivy for 1year+ and currently bf Elly since 1-2-99). I am pretty new to the list and hesitate to offer anything for fear of sounding like a complete moron--but for what it's worth--you may want to try that rather than having to supliment formula--or fenugreek. --Joy Asheville, NC j.ham@... --------------------------------------------------- Handmade Knives by Bob and Jay Ham <Under Construction> http://www.mindspring.com/~j.ham/knivesbyham.htm

Guest guest
Stevie, I am sorry to say but the formula is what is causing the cycle. Everytime you give him formula you are decreasing your supply. The only way to build up your supply to meet his needs is to nurse him exclusively (no supplements) for at least 72 hours. I know how hard it can be with another child. I homeschool so both kids are home all day. It is important to really establish your supply before ever giving pacifiers and supplements. I know how frustrating it is in the beginning being so tied down but once you get your supply established you will be able to get more free time. Your breastmilk is like health elixir for him. Why are you waking him? Won't your breasts fill up more by letting him sleep? Maybe if you were letting him sleep and getting some sleep yourself your milk supply would pick up. Nerves and tension can really interefere with let down. I do deep breathing and relaxation during nursing to help my letdown. Stick with it. Breastfeeding is the best start you can give your baby. It is worth the sacrafice. Wendi Re: fenugreek Amy~I bf my dd a, & there never seemed to be enough mik to satisfy her. I would feed her & then she would take 4-5 oz. of formula right after. Guest guest
You girls DO give great advice & support Last night was so bad I can't get to sleep at night. Every nght he is up for 3-4 hrs. just looking around. I guess it could be worse & he could be crying. I don't understand that supplamenting is hurting my supply. The reason I say so is this: if he completely empties me & chews for an hour at least, which he always does, then I feed him 2 hours later, & he does it again how does that hurt my milk?? I don't gve him formula in leau of the breast, always after if he wants more. I understand that allowing him time on an empty breast lets my body build up more milk, so I try not to cut that short. But don't you thnk that sometimes they just are very hungry ?? I know that as adults we are consistant in what we eat at meals...but aren't there some meals that are larger than others?? Just b/c we are hungrie rat that particular time? The offerings of formula are not at every feeding...he is also very gassy, stuggle all the time to get him to burp. Even with just bmilk he is gassy. I have heard yo all talk about dairy & have decided to stop eating it...I figured it's worth a try. I also think that has thrush, small little white balls in cheeks & under tongue?? So far I'm not affected, have no blisters or cracks. What should I be feeling if I have it??? Thanks ladies.... Guest guest
Hi Stevie, I had one bout with thrush, and while my baby had large white patches inside his mouth, I never had any symptoms. The easiest thing to do is to find some Gentian Violet at your pharmacy. I've heard of some stores carrying it on the shelf, and others behind the pharmacy counter, so you may have to ask. GV only works on yeast, so if it's yeast/thrush, and the GV takes care of it, no more worries. It's wonderfully purple, and you paint it on (on your nipples and inside baby's mouth, and even on his bottom if he has a rash) so make sure you don't do it a few weeks before getting portraits made. Thrush can also make a baby gassy, and it can also be painful for them, which might be one of the reasons he can't sleep well. Remember how the pregnancy pains ruined a good night's sleep?? As for you getting some sleep when is awake, take him into your bed and tuck him under the covers beside you. He'll wake you if he needs you. You don't have to be entertaining after dark! As for the " chewing " it's also called comfort sucking. It's sort of like our adult reasons for eating chocolate. There may not be a nutritional *need* to eat chocolate, but it's just too good to stop sometimes!! Yes, even if you are full! Don't worry if he's not acting full and you think he needs extra formula to fill him up. Just let him enjoy what he gets from your breasts. Keep watch on his diapers to make sure that he's having lots of wet diapers (about 5-6 disposables or 6-8 cloth) every day, and about 4 poopies a day, although that should be slowing down now that he's getting into his 6th week. Someone once told me that " enough " poop would be a " handful " so I used to just imagine holding what poop arrived in the diaper, and if it filled my imaginary palm, I was happy. And you should have a " handful's " worth every 24 hours. Sometimes it comes in spurts of several days (not pooping every day but saving up for a blow-out!) and you will see that for each day missed, there's about a handful!! Your body can do it if you let it, so give it time, and stop giving him formula! You aren't avoiding dairy if you're giving him formula either, since it's made from cow's milk. Soy should be avoided unless you're out of options, and you're not yet -- you have lots more milk to make!
