Question about insulin

Hi all, I have some good news and not so good news to share.

The good news is that the A1C that I just got from the Endo is 6.7 down from

7.6. That's good but the Endo feels that my blood sugars are still high so we

are working on that.

Along with the two 500 Metformin that I take twice a day and the 10 units of

Byetta, I'm now going to be adding 12 units of Lantus at bed time. He also told

me to monitor my fasting numbers for the first three days and if the numbers

aren't between 120 and 100 I should up the Lantus 2 units and do that for 3 more

days if its not between the 120 or 100 mark then I need to call him.

What I'm wondering about since I've never taken insulin before and the only

experience I've had was as a caretaker many years ago (over 20) is should I be

worried about having hypoglycemia?

Should I have a snack before taking the Lantus or is that a bad idea. If so what

kind. I don't want to screw things up. I want to get my blood sugar numbers

down.

The reason we are trying to get the numbers low as possible is because I'm

having severe neuropathy pain in my left foot and it has started going up the

inside of my ankle. I've maxed out on the highest dose of Lyrica and the only

pain medicine that he can move me to is ones that have the potential for

addiction. I want to leave that kind of medicine until there is just no hope and

I just can't stand the pain and its all the time. But he thinks that if we get

my numbers down we can get the pain maybe to subside. When that happens I'll be

able to exercise more and I'll start loosing more weight. He did have a little

bit of a dilemma because it was between addressing the pain or my weight issue.

The weight issue was that Lyrica causes weight gain and then he is adding the

Lantus and he said that it might make me gain also.

Anyway, would like to hear from those of you who use this type of insulin.
