So, now that I actually have time off, I got to thinking--not always a good sign, but sometimes mildly amusing. I was watching the news on TV this morning. I notice that whereas ten years ago, even five, newscasters pronounced the word "Iraynian," it is now being pronounced "Irahnian." This got me to thinking--you know-beneath those plaques: So, does this mean that we are now to be treated to hearing Canadians referred to as "Canahdians," that Mexicans shall now be referred to as "Mexicahns," or even more shattering, shall we here be referred to as "Armericahns?" I shall leave Iraq out of this. During the tennis season, it drove me slightly batty (tennis does that to me) to hear Argentinians referred to as Argentines," primarily by McEnroe. So, with the trivia out of the way, I advance to what Italian Uni versities referred to as the "Quadrivia," or the main subjects of study, as opposed to the electives: We did go out yesterday and say nearly 200 Tule Elk, endless numbers of Turkey Vultures, Ravens, Crows, Quails, Cowbirds, Black birds, three varieties, and even three Golden Eagles. We even came to a point where about 100 of the Tule Elk decided (big decision) to actually cross the road, right in front of my car, Marco Polo. Tule Elk take these decisions seriously, so the whole process from the first Elk pointing nose toward the road which we were on, to the passing of the last Mother Elk and Baby, took nearly 1.5 hours. No, the grass did not appear greener on the other side. We did not know what prompted the exodus. The other 100 or so Tule Elk just went on munching, ignoring their wayfaring friends. Then we came back to the Berkeley Marina and saw no end of Brown Pelicans diving, gulls riding the thermal air currents, the sun setting, and one lone racoon appearing. Below is a very strange and mysterious statue at the beginning of the long Berkeley Pier: No one knows who designed and constructed this statue; about 20 years ago, it was found at about 5:00 a.m. neatly installed opposite the Berkeley Pier. It was ultimately decided that it was not cost-effective to remove it, so it is still there, and is still a mystery--so far as I can determine. Love to you all, n P.S. Guest guest
Connie, I actually do know that, but the poor pronunciation and enunciation of U.S. broad casters drives me nuts! My mother was part Iranian, and most languages OTHER than English use what we call Latin vowel pronunciation. My moaning was about our broad casters, not about actual correctness. They only mispronouced it for 40 years--kind of like saying "Eye-Rack" for Iraq, etc. Thank you for posting to us about this, though, n To: MSersLife Sent: Monday, June 15, 2009 6:53:30 AMSubject: RE: So, after my birthday, many family June birthdays, I have a day OFF/ on to recounting our jaunt yesterday, too! n, I lived in Iran during the late 70s and attended Tehran American School . Guest guest
n, I am totally with you about the poor pronunciation of broadcasters. We have a new weatherperson here on one of our local channels and she mispronounces a major city in North Texas daily. The city is Denton—she says Dehton. She leaves out the “n”. Drives me crazy. You would think that someone at the TV station would tell her. Just one of my many many pet peeves. I notice that whereas ten years ago, even five, newscasters pronounced the word " Iraynian, " it is now being pronounced " Irahnian. " This got me to thinking--you know-beneath those plaques: So, does this mean that we are now to be treated to hearing Canadians referred to as " Canahdians, " that Mexicans shall now be referred to as " Mexicahns, " or even more shattering, shall we here be referred to as " Armericahns? " I shall leave Iraq out of this. During the tennis season, it drove me slightly batty (tennis does that to me) to hear Argentinians referred to as Argentines, " primarily by McEnroe. So, with the trivia out of the way, I advance to what Italian Uni versities referred to as the " Quadrivia, " or the main subjects of study, as opposed to the electives: We did go out yesterday and say nearly 200 Tule Elk, endless numbers of Turkey Vultures, Ravens, Crows, Quails, Cowbirds, Black birds, three varieties, and even three Golden Eagles. Guest guest
And to think that in my childhood radio anouncer English was regarded as "standard English!" EEK! Love to you, Connie, and to all here, n To: MSersLife Sent: Monday, June 15, 2009 2:34:19 PMSubject: RE: So, after my birthday, many family June birthdays, I have a day OFF/ on to recounting our jaunt yesterday, too! n, I am totally with you about the poor pronunciation of broadcasters. We have a new weatherperson here on one of our local channels and she mispronounces a major city in North Texas daily. The city is Denton —she says Dehton. She leaves out the “nâ€. Drives me crazy. You would think that someone at the TV station would tell her. Just one of my many many pet peeves. Connie, I actually do know that, but the poor pronunciation and enunciation of U.S. broad casters drives me nuts! My mother was part Iranian, and most languages OTHER than English use what we call Latin vowel pronunciation. My moaning was about our broad casters, not about actual correctness. They only mispronouced it for 40 years--kind of like saying "Eye-Rack" for Iraq , etc. Thank you for posting to us about this, though, n From: Connie Buran <chadma1scom (DOT) net>To: MSersLife@yahoogrou ps.comSent: Monday, June 15, 2009 6:53:30 AMSubject: RE: So, after my birthday, many family June birthdays, I have a day OFF/ on to recounting our jaunt yesterday, too! n, I lived in Iran during the late 70s and attended Tehran American School . My father was a US government contractor working with the Shah’s helicopter program. I was evacuated out with many plane loads of American women and children in December of 78.
