What the heck is wrong with my child

my 6 year old has become aggressive and bipolar like. One minute he's nice then the next he's talking to you in a gruff voice saying things like "go away I hit you" and he swings at me. He's soooo moody it changes in the blink of an eye. I spend my day trying not to set him off. This has been going on for about a month now. I can't take it anymore. ANy ideas as to what is going on?
