Guest guest Posted May 7, 2004 Report Share Posted May 7, 2004 I know of a person who has been certified as a Paramedic for at least 2 years. They went straight through the program and never worked at any level until attempting to as a paramedic. They have only been cleared to work as a basic until recently " upgrading " to intermediate. They dropped out of trying to be cleared as a paramedic again because " I don't want the responsibility " . This person has had several code situations (DNRs, pts deteriorating) that their " true " basic partner ran, while they drove. I personally believe that no one should be able to go straight through from off the street to paramedic all in one shot. They should have to work a minimum of 6 months, at least, before upgrading. I think it is alot to ask a person to go from little responsibility to having it all without any experience. I have seen it too many times: It's cuz I'm new, I've never done this before, I don't know what's going on, What do we do now?. All could be at least partially alliviated by working your way up. The " I don't want the responsibility " comment from this individual pissed me off too because as an EMT, no matter the level, you are always responsible for your patient. They trust in you to provide them the best care you can, whether it be a transfer or a 911 call. I was wondering how the rest of y'all felt.
