I beleive the risk increases with dose. I think its listed for up to 10mg per Kilogram per dose, the doses Andy advises are 1/8 - 1/2 mg per pound, so way smaller. You have to remember also that Mercury surely WILL damage the immune system. So low frequent dosing is advised and you can always check bloods for the above every 3-6 months or so. Using the recommeded support supps helps and I think the ALA does too. Have you done DDI hair elements test and checked it against the counting rules? > I have read the love letter and other archives, but I want to know > more. We went to holiday playscheme today with several other ASDer's we haven't seen since August, 3 mums commented on the changes in Sam and we came back Dh says when you sat on the side and observed all the kids Sam seemed the least Autistic of all. Weird since most of them are verbal and Sam's not but its all the other stuff - what we are seeing is normal facial expressions and body posture, spontaneous and apppropraite laughter, great socialbility, much improved receptive language, much more purposeful and confident. I want words! (Repeat after me - this a marathon NOT a sprint!) He communcates very well though with PECS and gestures, even taught him high 5's this week, I am VERY pleased, I want more but its been worth it even with no more improvements:) HTH Mandi in UK

This site has been so helpful in learning about treatments for my son. He has mercury toxicity that most definitely crossed the blood brain barrier. Guest guest
IMO, as long as you supplement adequately during and between chelation, I don't think you are going to hurt the immune system. I think MERCURY hurts the immune system even more than the potential of chelation. Ethan has done only 8 rounds of low dose, every four hour, dmsa chelation. The changes have been pretty noticeable-- he got dismissed from private OT because she " just doesn't see any sensory issues anymore " ... he lost his school sped status for skills like attending and focusing, and his school OT says that technically he doesn't qualify anymore, but since he's on an IEP and he has a valid handicapping condition, that she'd like to keep him on IEP one more year to work on his gross motor skills so that he's ready for PE in 1st grade-- but she dropped all of her " sensory " objectives too. About three rounds into chelation, his vision therapist reported that " suddenly, he can DO this! " ... his eye contact improved...grandparents could not get over the changes in him, and my husband and I feel like we have more normal days than not-normal anymore. His orig dx was SID-only but there were definitely nights where I cried b/c I thought we were headed for several more dx's namely OCD, ADHD, and Aspergers. So is he completely recovered-- not yet. I still see low muscle tone and gross motor coordination issues. He cannot run or climb or jump as agilely as his peers. He still has some regulatory issues with getting really overexcited or overfocused on something that he is anticipating happening, such as a friend coming over to play. He still has a lot of environmental allergies and asthma that I am hoping to improve upon, too. But he is GREATLY improved. No one suspects there is anything but a " typical " child here. Oh, and constipation resolved around chelation round 4 or 5, too. Especially the " mental " part of it-- being able to recognize that he had to go and that he ought to go and not hold it in. Guest guest
It's a little hard to answer your questions because some of us do a variety of interventions, including chelation, and " recovery " isn't defined except perhaps loosely to mean the loss of a pdd diagnosis (which includes nos, autism and aspergers). My son started with a dx of aspergers and in poor health. The gfcf diet helped a lot - reduction in aspie tendencies and improvement in health. He also took a variety of supplements. Five months later he began chelation. More improvements, some very fast (loss of aggressive/angry episodes the first month for example). During this time, we also greatly reduced processed foods, environmental toxins, etc. He was chelating for 2 years with no significant adverse side effects. Now his dx is dyslexia. I suspect some degree of APD underlies it. However, he is indistinguishable from his peers, earned a blue belt in karate in less than 1 1/2 years (couldn't balance on one foot at all at the start of chelation), and participates in all school activities without any accomodations. His health is excellent except for minor allergy issues in the fall. So far this year, he has missed 2 days of school. Previously, up to a fourth of the school year was lost to illness. I see minor blips in social skills and fine motor control, others don't, and everything now affecting him falls in the realm of dyslexia, not autism. However, I consider him to be on the fringe of the spectrum, and we are starting up a trial period of further chelation to see if the remaining issues can be resolved. A point to consider - chelation does not restore lost years of normal development. Extensive opportunities to redress social and learning discrepancies will go a long way to assisting with recovery. > I am pretty new here and have been lurking for a few weeks. Guest guest
Welcome to the list. Heavy metals are hard on the immune system. Make sure to read the FAQs about proper dosing and dosing schedule. Motto here is " low and slow " . We all want to get the metals out but trying to do it too fast can overwhelm the detox pathways. Guest guest
>>We want to chelate, but have heard that it can be damaging > to the immune system. Can anyone comment on this? Today is day 1 of round 52 for my 4 kids, and if their immune systems are being damaged, I sure have not seen it. They have not had a cold for over a year now, that I can remember, and the last one they had, lasted about 4 days. > > I have read the love letter and other archives, but I want to know > more. Have any of you had recovery after chelating? My son is no longer autistic, altho he is not yet age appropriate. I don't know that you would consider him " recovered " , but he sure is not autistic any longer. His story here, if you are interested http://www.danasview.net/myson.htm >> Is anyone done > chelating? We are on round 52. Based on our experience so far, I think we might be more than half finished, but still a long way to go. >> How is the health of your child now both during and after > chelation? Before: average health, frequent rashes for one kid. Now: very good, never sick. Dana
