Guest guest
Those of you who have been approved by out of state insurance - did any of you run into the statement " Gastric Bypass Surgery can be performed locally " ? My insurance co. said this is why I was denied. WHen I first called and questioned this, they told me that I met the criterior for approval, but I would have to have a local surgeon deem the lap procedure medically necessary over the open procedure. So I put in a call to a local surgeon, who emailed me with some not-so-nice oppinions about the Lap procedure. Needless to say - he is not going to reccommend me. I called my ins. company to ask more questions about trying for the straight appeal, and this time they told me that I had to establish care with a local surgeon so they can first determine if I am even eligible for coverage of WLS. HUNH? They spent almost a month " requesting more info " .... " contacting doctors " ... " requesting records " ...yada,yada,yada - and all of a sudden they don't know if I qualify for coverage? WHat's up with that? The customer Rep. was nice enough to tell me that they usually don't cover out-of-network providers because there is no set price limit and the surgeon can charge whatever they want and the ins. would have to pay it. So I asked, what if Dr. R agrees to their allowable charge? Easy question right? Then they went back to the " MUST ESTABLICH CARE WITH LOCAL SURGEON TO DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY " - I want to scream - I am so confused - and on top of everything - I have been unable to get in touch with Dr. Rutledge. From what I have heard from other patients, I trust that he will be able to point me in the right direction. Am I dreaming? Am I ever going to get this second chance at a normal life, free of everyday joint pain and social embarrassment? Any advice would be appreciated! Guest guest
Dear Tara, Don't give up on Dr. R. We've just sung his praises so much he must be staying covered up. You might want to touch base with Walter Lindstrom. I think his web site is Walter@... He may have some info on his site about the " local surgeon " thing. Why did your other surgeon object to the " lap thing " ? Kathy might also have some insight. Guest guest
from my understandin the lap is the new cool way to operate everyone will be doing it someday. What bad things did he have to say about the lap way? is he a bariatric surgeon? find a surgeon that has jumped on the lap bandwagon techniques are like religion to some dr. they believe in no other way that their way is the best so find one that agrees with you on that point. the ins is just hoping that if they make this to complicated you will give up, pay for your own surgery,or cancel your coverage.they are just trying to dazzle you with their fast and fancy footwork making you jump through hoops. power trip maybe?
